Argentina’s current democratic period, inaugurated in 1983, has differed markedly from the country’s previous democratic experiences as a result of a new form of relationship between citizens and politicians, particularly the emergence of a more sophisticated and demanding citizenry determined to translate preexisting ideals of democratic representation into a novel civic concern for governmental accountability. The dramatic experience of state terrorism under the last military dictatorship, which governed the country from 1976 to 1983, gave rise to a new actor—the human rights movement—which would play a crucial pedagogic role in Argentine society, introducing a much-needed concern for rights and the rule of law into the country’s political culture.

In Russia, the “democratic transition” took place about ten years after the transitions in Latin America: the democratic period began in Argentina in 1983, while the Soviet Union disappeared in 1991. Many comparative works have highlighted the role played by civil societies in the fall of these authoritarian regimes (Okuneva 1994; Khoros 1998; Vizgunova 2001; Vorozheikina 2001; Meier-Dallach and Juchler 2002). Andrew Arato and Jean Cohen were “truly impressed by the importance in East Europe and Latin America, as well as in the advanced capitalist democracies, of the struggle for rights and their expansion, of the establishment of grassroots associations and initiatives and the ever renewed construction of institutions and forums of critical publics.”

According to political and journalistic common sense, French universities are ill adapted to the new economic and social situation at home and abroad, and incapable of reform. We intend to counter this view by showing that, far from being an immobile behemoth as it is often described, the French university system—just like that of other European countries—has witnessed a silent revolution over the past twenty years, preparing it for the current reforms and, in particular, for the latest reform of its administration.

This article examines competing and converging discourses on the value of labor in rural Kyrgyzstan. Drawing on ethnographic fieldwork conducted between 2006 and 2010, Iuse case studies of a woman pastoralist, an agricultural entrepreneur, and a Muslimcleric to demonstrate the competing frames of valuation that current work practices areoriented towards. I show how these frames of valuation are situated in the complex historyof work in postsocialist Central Asia. The article demonstrates that formally distinctand conflicting ideologies such as socialist and capitalist ideas of labor, concepts ofservice to kin, and Islamic practice all converge in their emphasis on the moral value ofhard work. I show that the main distinction made about different forms and evaluationsof work is the kind of collectivity that the labor contributes to. These distinctions allowa greater understanding of the work choices and judgments Kyrgyzstani citizens make,as well as revealing work as an important nexus of personhood.

The current neoliberal agrarian policies in Russia and Argentina (and the former Soviet Union and Latin America at large) have been strongly infl uenced by the Western agribusiness model of the agrarian economy. Following periods of state-led agrarian development (a planned economy until 1991 in Russia and a state-led market economy in Argentina until 1990), the rural sector in these countries is now characterized by free prices and relatively free import and export policies.

Etkind’s perspective is not chronological or genealogical but structuralist. Literature and fi ction replace an absent theoretical tradition in critical thinking, a strategy that is justifi ed in light of the multiple function of literary fi ction in Russian culture. The book returns again and again to the plot lines of Gogol’s Nose and Dostoyevsky’s Double, which supply the book with more than a metaphor: these books offer the clue to what the formalists would have called the device through which the argument of Internal Colonization can be unlocked.

The article introduces a new method for the empirical analysis of cultural phenomena, called multi-lectic anatomy. It is applied to two key culture-political “art actions” by Leningrad/Saint Petersburg artist Timur Novikov (1958–2002), who gained fame through a wide range of symbolic conceits, creating assumed satirical intentions, cynical denials, kynic hoaxes, and spoofs. The article models actual audiences’ differing judgments of Novikov’s performances. The case studies introduce the formal vocabulary of multi-lectic anatomy, expand Alexei Yurchak’s well-known discussion of stiob and the performative shift, and adapt the Russian concept of poshlost’ to discuss perceptions of moral and aesthetic bad faith. Many observers took delight in Novikov’s postmodern games and paradoxes. The article describes these as elaborate cultural expressions of a banal vacuum of values, and raises questions concerning the wider historical significance of Novikov’s supposedly dangerous artistic strategies.

Germany has a long and rich tradition of qualitative social research (QSR) in sociology and neighboring disciplines. Since the 1970s, several schools have been established in this rapidly developing fi eld. Until quite recently, access to the vast part of the methodological literature that emerged in this context had been available only for those who read German. However, the situation has started to change in the last decade. There is a growing number of publications in English which introduce the methodological innovations of German-speaking social scientists to a much broader public (Flick, Kardoff, and Steinke 2004; Knoblauch, Flick, and Maeder 2005; Bohnsack, Pfaff, and Weller 2010).
