What are the forces behind the increasing globalization of economic life? How does globalization affect the functioning of national economies? What difficulties confront government policymakers in dealing with the global economy? These issues are addressed in this volume by leading specialists. The contributors present a range of unique and varied perspectives from which they consider aspects of the increasing integration of economic life, exploring implications for the functioning of domestic markets in a rapidly changing global economy. The result is a collection of insights that provide a framework for understanding globalization as an economic phenomenon. The determinants of national economic growth within this global context, and the way in which national governments and international organizations can best achieve growth and development without instability and widening inequality are also discussed.

Growth and Distribution is the first text designed to support a comprehensive advanced undergraduate or graduate course on the theory, measurement, and history of economic growth. The book, which presents Classical and Keynesian in parallel with Neoclassical approaches to growth theory, introduces students to advanced tools of intertemporal economic analysis through carefully developed treatments of land- and resource-limited growth, and covers money and growth, the impact of government debt and social security systems on growth, and theories of endogenous growth and endogenous technical change. The models emphasize rigorous reasoning from basic economic principles and insights without excessive formal complication, and respond to students' interest in the history and policy dilemmas of real-world economies. Surveys of data and discussion of empirical controversies are closely integrated with the development of theoretical tools. The book includes access to a comprehensive data set extending the Penn World Tables in a form suitable for exploration in hands-on student projects. In addition to carefully worked examples showing how to use the analytical techniques presented, the book contains many problems suitable for inclusion in problem sets and examinations. Detailed answers to these problems are also provided.

Dale W Jorgenson
Cambridge, Mass: MIT Press, 1998, Vol. 1, 450 с.
Econometric General Equilibrium Modeling presents an econometric approach to general equilibrium modeling of the impact of economic policies. Earlier approaches were based on the "calibration" of general equilibrium models to a single data point. The obvious disadvantage of calibration is that it requires highly restrictive assumptions about technology and preferences, such as fixed input-output coefficients. These assumptions are contradicted by the massive evidence of energy conservation in response to higher world energy prices, beginning in 1973. The econometric approach to general equilibrium modeling successfully freed economic policy analysis from the straight jacket imposed by calibration.

Energy, the Environment, and Economic Growth presents a new econometric general equilibrium model of the United States that captures the dynamic mechanisms underlying growth trends and responses to energy and environmental policies. Jorgenson uses the model to analyze the impacts of environmental regulations on U.S. economic growth and tax policies for controlling U.S. emissions of carbon dioxide.

The question of how inequality is generated and how it reproduces over time has been a major concern for social scientists for more than a century. Yet the relationship between inequality and the process of economic development is far from being well understood.

Robert M. Solow
Oxford: Oxford University Press, 2000
This is the second edition of a book on the subject for which Professor Solow received the Nobel Prize in Economics (1987). This edition includes the Nobel Lecture and the six chapters from the First Edition, and adds a transitional chapter (the 'Intermezzo') and six new chapters on recent developments in growth theory.
The author is the most prestigious living growth theorist in the world, and a Nobel Laureate. Provides a relatively brief 12 chapter overview of old and new growth theory, with sympathetic, buy very critical, discussion of recent theorists such as Roemer, Lucas, and Grossman. A lot of interest in economic growth in both liberal arts (undergraduate and graduate) departments of economics and in business economics (undergraduate and graduate). Only book to cover traditional exogenous and new endogenous growth theory in historical sequence, showing casual relationships, similarities, and contrasts.

Vani K. Borooah
Hampshire: Palgrave Macmillan, 1996
The purpose of this book is to set out in a comprehensive, but succinct manner, the key points surrounding four economic issues that generate, today, much discussion and debate. These are the issues of growth, unemployment, distribution and government. It is aimed at an audience that is sufficiently interested in economic issues to read a book that sets out these issues clearly, comprehensively and above all, seriously. This has implications for both the style and the content of the book. Clarity requires that the arguments be presented coherently, without resort to jargon. Comprehensiveness requires a wide perspective embracing theoretical, empirical and policy matters. Lastly, seriousness requires that the most up-to-date thinking on economic matters is presented in digestible form, but without violence to the integrity of the original arguments. Achieving this trinity of objectives has been the primary aim of this book.
