Richard A. Posner
New York: Aspen Law & Business, 2002, 747 с.
This is the fifth edition of a textbook-treatise first published in 1973. Its subject is economic analysis of legal rules and institutions. It differs from other textbooks on the subject in the breadth of its coverage and in the emphasis placed on the legal regulation of nonmarket behavior - not only the familiar (to economists) examples such as drug addiction, thefts of art, sexual acts, surrogate motherhood, rescues at sea, flag desecration, and religious observances. It also differs in the principle of organization. The book is organized around legal rather than economic concepts. This approach enables the law to be seen, grasped, and studied as a system - a system that economic analysis can illuminate, reveal as coherent, and in places improve. By the same token, the approach enables economics to be seen as a tool for understanding and reforming social practices, rather than as a formal system of daunting mathematical complexity. The explication of economics in this book stresses the unity, simplicity, and power, but also the subtlety, of economic principles. The presentation is unformal, and no prior acquaintance with economics, or mathematical competence, on the part of the reader is assumed.

This study offers a unified theoretical structure to analyze exchange, formation of economic rights, and organization. The cost of measuring accurately all assets' attributes is prohibitive. Therefore, rights are never fully delineated and others (using theft, adverse selection, free riding, and shirking) may appropriate one's assets. The central question is how people allocate resources and organize their activities to maximize the value of their rights. The approach emphasizes nonmarket constraints, but is also applicable to market economies. It is useful for analyzing allocations within organizations as well as allocation by voting and charity. Chapters have been extended for this second edition and a new chapter devoted to the firm has been added.

Thrainn Eggertsson
Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1990
An important new research program has developed in economics that extends neoclassical economic theory in order to examine the effects of institutions on economic behavior. The body of work emerging from this new line of inquiry includes contributions from the various branches of economic theory, such as the economics of property rights, the theory of the firm, cliometrics and law and economics. This book is the first comprehensive survey of this research program, which the author terms "neoinstitutional economics." The author proposes a unified approach to this research, integrating the work of various contributors and emphasizing the common principles of inquiry that tie the work together. The theoretical discussion is accomplished by empirical studies dealing with a whole range of institutions and economic systems.

Economic Evolution explores three of the main approaches within the new institutional economics: the new theory of the firm, Nelson and Winter's evolutionary economics and game theoretic accounts of spontaneous evolution. Close analysis reveals that the approaches differ on such fundamental issues as the meaning of terms like 'institution' and 'evolution'. However, the book also uncovers two evolutionary mechanisms that govern processes of economic change in all of these approaches.

This comprehensive book applies modern economic principles to study a firm's strategic position. The book integrates insights from the theory of the firm, industrial organization and strategy research while building upon a strong theoretical and empirical foundation familiar to academics working in economics and strategy. The broad sweep of modern economics and strategy research is organized and presented in an appealing format. Many topics dovetail with important current research agendas. In this edition, the authors have completely reworked their discussions of a number of difficult topics, such as "make or buy fallacies", competitor identification, commitment, and strategic positioning. They also introduce a "make or buy issue tree" and an "industry analysis checklist" that readers should find very useful when assessing make or buy decisions and performing five forces analyses.

Empirical Studies in Institutional Change is a collection of nine empirical studies by fourteen scholars. Dealing with issues ranging from the evolution of secure markets in seventeenth-century England to the origins of property rights in airport slots in modern America, the contributors analyze institutions and institutional change in various parts of the world and at various periods of time. The volume is a contribution to the new economics of institutions, which emphasises the role of transaction costs and property rights in shaping incentives and results in the economic arena.

This book applies an institutional perspective on transnational entrepreneurship to empirical investigations of transnational corporations from Hong Kong and Singapore. Henry Wai-chung Yeung argues that significant variations in institutional structures of home countries explain variations in the entrepreneurial endowments of prospective transnational business networks. This is illustrated by empirical data from two in-depth studies of over 300 TNCs from Hong Kong and Singapore and over 120 of their foreign affiliates in Asia.
Entrepreneurship and the Internationalisation of Asian Firms is a timely contribution to theoretical and empirical studies in international business and will be widely read by those interested in international business, industrial economics, organization studies, political economy, regional studies and economic geography.

Geoffrey M. Hodgson
Northampton: Edward Elgar, 2000
Geoff Hodgsons innovative and important new book is about the future of economics as a viable discipline. It examines not only evolutionary economics but the development of economic theory during the twentieth century. The book reflects on the origins and consequences of the narrowing and increasing irrelevance of mainstream economics, suggesting that it will be inadequate to cope with the complex ideas of the new millennium.
