Using a consistent theoretical orientation, this book explores the "life course" approach to family life - including parent-child, spousal, and sibling relationships. It reflects the diversity represented in contemporary families as they grapple with changes and transitions in family relationships during the life cycle. "Families Across Time" is unique in its integration of research, theory, and application in a variety of topic areas related to family life. The contributors to this volume, which include prominent and established scholars as well as young professionals, address a diversity of family forms as well as all stages of family life - in contrast to the traditional emphasis on early stages. The essays in this book represent a breadth of content and scholarship; at the same time they are student-friendly and highly readable. Extensive case scenarios and other examples augment the content of each essay, serving as examples to enhance the reader's ability to understand the challenges families face over the life course. The book's approach emphasizes transitions and tasks in lieu of focusing on the characteristics of stages associated with family development. Different aspects of family life are examined up-close and across the life span for each topic covered. Price, McKenry, and Murphy offer introductions to each section, which frame each set of essays and provide context for the reader. Discussion questions are included at the end of each chapter.

This report draws together the findings of a four-year programme of research into families and work. Incorporating 19 research projects, it focuses on three key themes: the effects of work on family life; the employer's perspective on work-family relations and social responsibility; and work and family in relation to the wider community. Drawing out some key issues for policy makers, the author considers: are families coping?; does work keep families out of poverty?; is childcare still a problem for working families?; is work or family people's central interest?; has labour market deregulation changed the profile of work and the workplace?; do we need more regulation?; are social networks disintegrating?; and are work places responding to the needs of the workplace?.

One of the prevailing myths about the American family is that there once existed a harmonious family with three generations living together, and that this "ideal" family broke down under the impact of urbanization and industrialization. The essays in Families, History, and Social Change challenge this myth and provide dramatic revisions of simplistic notions about change in the American family. In these interdisciplinary essays that are deeply rooted in history, Hareven provides important perspectives on family relations in the present, dispels myths about family relations in the past, offers new directions in research and interpretation, and revises our understanding of social change. Hareven's essays, which are based on thirty years of research, combine empirical evidence with theoretical frameworks and discussions of the state of the art in this exciting field. The essays cover a wide spectrum of issues and topics such as the organization of the family and the household, the networks available to children as they were growing up, the role of the family in the process of industrialization, the division of labor in the family along gender lines, and the relations between the generations in the later years of life. Coincidentally, the essays revolve around three central themes: The family's interaction with the process of industrialization, the life course, and the development of the field of family history--and its future directions. They are both interdisciplinary and cross-cultural. Professor Hareven is a pioneer and leader in the development of the field of family history. Her work makes a major contribution to the theoretical and substantive aspects of scholarship on family life, past and present, and on social change. Her essays also provide a fine understanding of this field's development.
Family and The State of Theory [книги]
Опубликовано на портале: 28-11-2006David Cheal
Изд-во: University of Toronto Press, 1991, 213 с.
The book takes a broad comparative approach to the theories analyzed, both in terms of the empirical examples used (from North America, Europe and Australia) and in the discussion of how old and new approaches interact with one another. Cheal argues that it is possible to make the sense contemporary family theory by analyzing its divisions as the result of different experiences of modernity. These experiences are described as lying along three axes: first, the opposition between social modernism and its anti-modernists critics; second, the ideological effects of contradictions within modernity itself; and the third, the emerging difference modernist idealism and post-modernist skepticism. Another major theme of the book is the profound impact of feminism on contemporary family studies, and how this has been the catalyst for so much rethinking of the subject in recent years.

The second edition of Family Patterns, Gender Relations thoroughly examines the dynamics and patterns in family life. The 33 articles include a mix of classics and new work commissioned for the book. These readings, by leading scholars in Canada, the US, and the UK, help to build a thorough understanding of the relations through which people care for their children, themselves, and eachother. The book starts with a theoretical examination of what constitutes a family, examines the family as it has evolved historically, and then moves on to current issues, such as sexuality, childbirth, racial and ethnic diversity, and parenting.
Farewell to the tusovka: masculinities and femininities on the Moscow youth scene in Gender, Generation and Identity in Contemporary Russia, ed. By Pilkington H, Routledge:London&New York, 1996. pp. 237-264 [книги]

In the last two centuries, agriculture has been an outstanding, if somewhat neglected, success story. It has fed an ever-growing population with an increasing variety of products at falling prices, even as it has released a growing number of workers to the rest of the economy. This book, a comprehensive history of world agriculture during this period, explains how these feats were accomplished. Feeding the World synthesizes two hundred years of agricultural development throughout the world, providing all essential data and extensive references to the literature. It covers, systematically, all the factors that have affected agricultural performance: environment, accumulation of inputs, technical progress, institutional change, commercialization, agricultural policies, and more. The last chapter discusses the contribution of agriculture to modern economic growth. The book is global in its reach and analysis, and represents a grand synthesis of an enormous topic.
Finance Capitalism Unveiled: Finance Capitalism Unveiled: Banks and the German Political Economy [книги]
Опубликовано на портале: 13-03-2007Richard Deeg
Изд-во: University of Michigan Press, 1999, 328 с.
If we are moving toward one global financial market, will all national financial systems that determine how businesses raise money look the same? Richard Deeg argues that, despite financial market integration and considerable harmonization in the regulation of financial markets, the traditional structure and economic functions of national financial systems are not inevitably undermined. Using the case of Germany--a country with a strong and distinctive financial sector that is at the center of the pressures of economic integration--the author shows how the unique aspects of the German financial sector and its relationship to the German economy have persisted notwithstanding powerful pressures to change. Posing the German model of coordinated capitalism in which banks play an important role in shaping both firm behavior and the possibilities for state intervention in the economy against the liberal model of the United States and Britain in which the securities markets play a much greater role than banks, Deeg shows how the German model has survived competitive pressures in the international economic system that have pushed Germany--and other countries--toward the liberal model. This book will appeal to political scientists and economists interested in international financial markets, globalization, and the comparative study of domestic financial markets, as well as in German politics and the German economy. Richard Deeg is Assistant Professor of Political Science, Temple University.

Beverley McNamara looks at death from a sociological perspective. Arguing that despite popular belief death does not make us equal, she shows that dying is a chaotic and uncertain process. Yet despite the disorderly manner in which people die, McNamara demonstrates that social and cultural patterns can be found in the way we approach dying and the care of terminally ill people. She examines the medicalisation of care for the dying, attitudes of carers and the notion of the 'good death'. She also explores the euthanasia debate and our fear of cancer. Drawing on wide-ranging qualitative research, Fragile Lives is a sensitive analysis of the social issues surrounding death.

USA, 2001, 205 с.
A Framework for Understanding Poverty was Dr. Ruby Payne's first book, written for teachers with adaptations for work and community members. Its purpose is to educate people about the differences that separate economic classes and then teaching them strategies to bridge those gulfs. Ruby discusses at length the social cues or "hidden rules" that govern how we think and interact in society – and the significance of those rules in a classroom. Other topics include why students from generational poverty often fear being educated, discipline interventions that improve behavior, and the eight resources that make a difference to success.

This volume addresses many of the complex issues raised by North American integration through the lens of one of the largest and most global industries in the region: textiles and apparel. In part, this is a story of winners and losers in the globalization process, especially if one focuses on jobs lost and jobs gained in different countries and communities within North America, defined here as: Canada, the United States, Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean. However, it would be a mistake to view the industry solely in these zerosum terms. The North American apparel industry is an excellent illustration of larger trends in the global economy, in which regional divisions of labor appear to be one of the most stable and effective responses to globalization. The contributors to this volume are an international and interdisciplinary group of scholars who have all done detailed fieldwork at the firm and factory levels in one or more countries of North America. Taken together the essays offer theoretical and methodological innovations built around the intersection of the global commodity chains and industrial districts literatures, as well as innovative approaches to studying the impact of cross-national, interfirm networks in terms of production and trade issues, and local development outcomes for workers and communities.

Extending the frontiers of commodity chain research, this distinctive volume includes original work from major figures in sociology, history, geography, and labor studies. It underscores the wide and interdisciplinary appeal of chain approaches for analyzing the economic, social, and political dimensions of international trade and production networks. Commodity chain analysis sheds light on the political and ecological implications of economic globalization and on how activists in pursuit of social justice, workers' rights, and environmental protection can use it. Following a substantive review of literature in the field, the collection goes on to examine theoretical and methodological debates over how to conduct research on global commodity and value chains, how power is exercised through these chains, and how global economic activities are coordinated across space. The result is a rich and unusually coherent volume that demonstrates how commodity and value chain analysis is informing contemporary research in a variety of fields.
