Изд-во: Edward Elgar Publishing, 2005, 555 с.
This Handbook is an authoritative and invaluable reference tool, uniquely analyzing
the forces governing unionism, union behavior and union impact from a variety of
perspectives, both theoretical and empirical. The fourteen chapters are written in
an accessible style by acknowledged leading specialists from the fields of economics
and industrial relations. They offer a truly international perspective on this important
subject.
This superbly comprehensive Handbook examines the determinants of union membership,
models of union behavior and the economics of strikes, as well as the effects of
unions on wages, pay inequality and firm performance (to include innovation). It
also analyzes trade unions as political actors and their impact on macroeconomic
performance. Institutional detail is added in specific chapters documenting recent
developments in the US and the UK, and prospects for a Europeanization of collective
bargaining. A review of union density in more than 100 nations, is also provided.

The Leader in You [книги]

Dale Carnegie
New-York: Pocket Book, 1994, 256 с.
Essentially an updating of Dale Carnegie's enormously successful books of the 1930s
and '40s ( How to Win Friends and Influence People has thus far sold 30 million copies),
this book adds little new material. The major difference is that this effort is more
unabashedly focused on influencing people in order to make money, which is logical
since the book is aimed at business people. Carnegie's rules are reiterated: be euphoric
if you can and, if you can't, at least don't be negative; respect others and try
to make them feel praiseworthy and deserving of recognition; listening is just as
important as talking, perhaps more so. Business people are advised that they can
be leaders if they realize that the pyramidal structure of the corporation is being
replaced by teamwork; and if they set goals and keep them constantly in mind, business
people have a good chance of realizing their objectives. Thus, while Levine, CEO
of Dale Carnegie, and Crom, a vice-president of the firm, offer little that's original,
one senses that sales will be excellent.

Ronald Philip Dore
Geneva: International Labor Organization, 2004, 85 с.
The Sixth Nobel Peace Prize Social Policy Lectures were given in Tokyo from 1
to 3 December 2003. Professor Ronald Dore, Associate Researcher at the London School
of Economics delivered the series, which was organized in collaboration with Tokyo
University and the ILO Office in Japan. The theme of the lectures was "New Forms
and Meanings of Work in an Increasingly Globalized World". Ronald Dore, a Fellow
of the British Academy and an Honorary Foreign Fellow of both the Japanese Academy
and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, is renowned for his pioneering work,
analysing the transformation of labour markets in Japan and other industrial societies.
The lectures focused on the evolution of work and relations at work with special
reference to industrial societies. They were delivered in four separate sessions,
and dealt with the following themes: (i) The pains and rewards of work in the twenty-first
century; (ii) The concrete meanings of labour flexibility; (iii) The direction of
social change and (iv) Global markets and national employment systems.
Drawing on his academic contributions, spread over several decades, Dore discussed
a range of analytically important issues concerning the course and the consequences
of globalization within and across countries of the world. These issues included
productivity growth, changes in working time, the transformation of workers’
interests into rights, the rise of individualism and metamorphosis of the bread-winner
model, the division and fragmentation of the job-for-life model, the rising capital
content of labour, flexibility as a tool for improving labour efficiency, the polarization
of the workforce and the rise of income inequalities, the changing fortunes of the
managerial class, the dilemma of reconciling social justice with meritocracy, competing
models of capitalism, and the prospects for securing social justice in the face of
rising inequalities.
The lectures drew attention to a perceived trend in industrial societies towards
a rising tolerance of inequalities. Globalization has always been associated with
the rise of “market individualism” and a polarization of the workforce.
As the pace of globalization has accelerated in recent years, the outcome has been
rising inequality within labour markets. Quite significantly, this is accompanied
by a rising tolerance of inequality, notably among the industrialized economies.
The lecturer discussed whether this trend could be reversed through national economic
and social policies. Even in an era of globalized markets, each country can still
initiate a range of independent policy choices; the reach and effectiveness of these
choices, however, tend to be circumscribed by the economic and cultural hegemony
of industrially advanced economies.

Henry Ford

As unions face an ongoing crisis all over the industrialized world, they have often
been portrayed as outmoded remnants of an old economic structure. This book argues
that despite structural shifts in the economy and in politics, unions retain important
functions for capitalist economies as well as for political democracy. Union revitalization
in the face of their current difficulties is therefore of fundamental importance.
The book charts the strategies unions are using to respond to global union decline
and to revive their fortunes in five countries - US, UK, Germany, Italy and Spain
- providing a wide range of institutional settings, union structures, identities
and union responses. It provides a rich source of documentation about union activity,
but more importantly it goes beyond description to address two of the big questions
in comparative research: How can we explain cross-country differences of union responses
to global decline? And how effective are these actions in helping to revitalize the
labour movements?
Union strategies and union revitalization outcomes varied strongly across countries
and were shaped by national industrial relations institutions, as well as by the
interactions between union, employer and state strategies. These findings support
the argument for national divergence of the varieties of capitalism literature and
challenge the globalization thesis which predicts a degree of convergence in the
fate of union movements across the advanced capitalist world. There is no single
revitalization strategy that works well for all union movements; the same strategy
is likely to produce different results in different countries. Moreover, evidence
for variation in revitalization outcomes emerges most clearly when we adopt a multi-dimensional
conceptualization of revitalization, moving beyond union membership and density to
embrace economic and political power as well as the institutional dimension of union
reform. Despite serious revitalization attempts in all countries the scale of revitalization
is extremely modest when compared to the great upsurges of unionism in history.
Varieties of Unionism presents important research and analysis of union strategy
for academics and graduate students of Industrial Relations, Management, Politics,
Political Economy, and Sociology.

Bengt Furaker
New-York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2005, 272 с.
This book presents conceptual tools and theoretical perspectives that can be used to sociologically analyze labour markets in modern capitalist societies. It makes use of the rich heritage of sociological thinking and draws on the classical work of Marx, Weber and Durkheim as well as structural-functionalist contributions. Contemporary sociological thinking is criticized for its tendency to exaggerate change in labour markets while the need to consider continuity is emphasized. Conceptual tools and perspectives are applied based on concrete phenomena, as the author combines abstract theoretical reasoning with theoretically founded reflections on actual labour market developments.

This book is about the relationship between corporate governance regimes and labour
management. It examines how finance and governance influence employment relationships,
work organization, and industrial relations by means of a comparative analysis of
Anglo-American, European, and Japanese economies.
The starting point is the distinction widely found in the corporate governance, business
systems, and political economy literature between countries dominated by 'shareholder
value' conceptions of corporate governance and those characterized by 'stakeholder'
regimes. By drawing on a wide range of countries, the book is able to demonstrate
the complexities of corporate governance arrangements and to present a more precise
and nuanced exploration of the linkages between governance and labour management.
Each country-based chapter provides an analysis of the evolution and key characteristics
of corporate governance and then links this to labour management institutions and
practices. The chapters cover the United States, United Kingdom, Japan, Australia,
France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, and Spain, with each written by a leading academic
expert in the field. By providing a historical review of the evolution of national
systems, the contributors provide judicious evaluations of the current state and
future direction of national governance and labour relations systems.
Overall, the book goes beyond the 'complementarities' between governance and labour
management systems identified in recent literature, and attempts to identify causal
relationships between the two. It shows how labour management institutions and practices
may influence finance and corporate governance systems, as well as vice versa. The
contributions to this book illuminate current debates about the determinants of corporate
governance, the convergence of national 'varieties of capitalism', and the impact
of corporate governance on managerial behaviour. The book highlights the complexities
of corporate governance systems and refines the distinction between market/outsider
and relational/insider systems.

Mauro F. Guillén
Изд-во: University of Chicago Press, 1994, 432 с.
In this book, Mauro F. Guillén explores differing historical patterns in the adoption of the three major models of organizational management: scientific management, human relations, and structural analysis. Moving beyond Reinhard Bendix's classic Work and Authority, Models of Management takes a fresh look at how managers have used these models in four countries during the twentieth century.
Guillén's study of two liberal-democratic societies (the United States and Great Britain) and two corporatist societies (Germany and Spain) reveals significant differences in the way managerial elites and firms have adopted the three models. His data show that ideas themselves—independent of material interests and technology—can cause organizational change. Throughout the book, contrasts between modernist-technocratic and liberal-humanist mentalities, as well as between Protestant and Catholic religious backgrounds, emerge as decisive factors in determining managerial ideology and practice.
In addition to analyzing management methods in organizations, Guillén explores larger issues: the interaction among managerial, government, and labor elites; the impact of the state and the professions on managerial behavior; and the role that managers play in modern societies.
