Michael Anderson
Изд-во: Cambridge University Press, 1995, 128 с.
This book is a short but comprehensive survey of the work on the history of the family in Western Europe and North America, for the period 1500-1914. Updated to include material published between 1980 and 1994, it aims to provide students of family history with a structured and balanced critique of and guide to the huge literature on the subject. Professor Anderson focuses particularly on the strengths and limitations of different approaches that have been adopted in the discipline, and seeks connections among themes, countries and periods.

The ageing of Western societies has provoked extensive sociological debate, surrounding both the role of the state and whether it can afford the cost of an ageing population and at the role of the family, especially women, in supporting older people. This edited collection brings together a range of leading researchers and theorists from across Europe to advance a sociological understanding of generational relations, in terms of the state and the family and how they are interlinked. Authors examine how changes, such as cuts in welfare provision, migration, urbanization and individualisation influence intergenerational relations. The collection addresses theoretical and policy issues connecting age and generation with the family and social policy and focuses both on cross-cultural comparison within societies and analysis based on a range of societies. The Myth of Generational Conflict will be of interest to academics and researchers in sociology, social policy and ageing and to policy makers concerned about the implications of demographic and policy changes.

Between Generations concerns powerful memories that continue to shape the present, but in this case in almost all families throughout the world. What is it that parents pass down to their children? How can we understand the mixture of conscious and unconscious models, myths, and material inheritance that are intertwined in both family and individual life stories? These questions turn out to be unexpectedly complicated, and answering them has suggested how a life-story approach can provide a new key to research on the dynamics of the family and on social change. Because culture is the essence of what makes individual humans into a group, the core of human social identity, its continuity is vital. Cultures are always changing, but the stability of languages, religions, and cultural habits can be astonishing. In contrast to the claims of culture to represent tradition over centuries, stands the sheer brevity of individual human life. Hence, the universal necessity for transmission between generations exists. This paperback edition in the Memory and Narrative series, brings together, contributions from the Americas and Asia as well as from Western and Eastern Europe. They combine the techniques of life story research with the insights of family therapy. Interdisciplinary and intellectually stimulating, the volume will appeal to students in many areas, including history, sociology, literature, psychology, and anthropology.

Migrant networks, in the form of families, associational ties and social organizations, stretch across the globe, connecting cultures and bridging national boundaries. The effects of this global networking are vast. This book is the first to stand back and explore the impact. Families living outside of their original national boundaries have had, and continue to have, a profound influence over the flow of people, goods, money and information. More in-depth perspectives reveal how immigrants face troubling issues of cultural identity, economic change, political uncertainty and social welfare. From an examination of nineteenth-century transnational families emigrating from Europe, to the Ghanaian Pentecostal diaspora in Europe today, this book combines broadly based analysis with more unusual case studies to reveal the complexities that immigrants and refugees must contend with in their daily lives. What are the experiences of migrant Turkish women living in Germany? In what ways has religion been hybridized amongst West African Muslim migrants in Paris? What are the gender relations and transnational ties amongst Bosnian refugees? Never has such a topic been more relevant. Problems relating to immigrants' and refugees' situations in their adopted countries continue to grow. This book, wide-ranging in its geographical and thematic scope, is a highly important and timely addition to debates on transnational families, immigrants and refugees.

While the family and its role continues to be a key topic in social and government policy, much of the literature is concerned with describing the dramatic changes that are taking place. By contrast, this text directly addresses the social processes responsible for these changes - how social policy interacts with what families actually do. Topics covered include: the relationship between morality and rationality in the family context; the variety of contemporary family forms; the purposes and assumptions of government interventions in family life; the relationship between different welfare states and different ideas about motherhood; third way thinking on families; divorce and post-divorce arrangements; lone parenthood and step-parenting; the decision to have children; the economic approach to understanding family process; and the legitimacy of state intervention in family life. With contributions from the UK, and North America, "Analysing Families" provides the framework within which to understand an increasingly important element in social policy.

David Cheal
Изд-во: University of Toronto Press, 1991, 213 с.
The book takes a broad comparative approach to the theories analyzed, both in terms of the empirical examples used (from North America, Europe and Australia) and in the discussion of how old and new approaches interact with one another. Cheal argues that it is possible to make the sense contemporary family theory by analyzing its divisions as the result of different experiences of modernity. These experiences are described as lying along three axes: first, the opposition between social modernism and its anti-modernists critics; second, the ideological effects of contradictions within modernity itself; and the third, the emerging difference modernist idealism and post-modernist skepticism. Another major theme of the book is the profound impact of feminism on contemporary family studies, and how this has been the catalyst for so much rethinking of the subject in recent years.

This lucid and accessible introductory text from a highly regarded author provides students who are encountering the sociology of the family for the first time with a systematic and stimulating way of thinking about the subject based on a core set of analytical questions. Coherent and persuasive, it blends theory with empirical examples drawn from all over the world, thus offering valuable insights into the differences and commonalities between families in quite diverse social and cultural contexts.

Marriage, Domestic Life and Social Change is an important tribute to the life and work of Jacqueline Burgoyne, a leading sociologist of marriage and the family who died in 1988. The book includes an appreciation of her life by the editor, and one of her previously unpublished papers on couple relationships.

In specially commissioned chapters, a group of distinguished colleagues working in the field of family studies address a number of key issues that are central to the work of Jacqueline Burgoyne. The topics explored include the organization of family life in Britain since World War II; a review of key themes in family research in the 1980s; commentary on the major demographic trends relating to marriage and the family over the last four decades; family ideologies; interventions into family life; and investigations into the inner world of marriage, seen from psychodynamic and sociological perspectives. The book is both a fitting tribute to the important work of Jacqueline Burgoyne and a comprehensive guide to the sociology of the family.

We are directed to "mind the time" on occasions when diligence to the clock is important. However, to deliberately invoke "mind your time" is to remember how quickly time, and the clock which serves as its agent, can so quickly recede into the mundane and taken for granted parts of our lives. The experience of time in families can both permeate all activities but nevertheless be hidden. The papers in this volume, representing a range of disciplines (history, sociology, psychology, family therapy, leisure studies, family science) intentionally foreground the way that time shapes everyday family worlds. Each chapter offers different insights into the way that we conceptualize time including analyses of pace, rhythm, negotiation, politics, timetables, schedules, social interaction and support. The meaning of time is illustrated through analyses of a variety of family issues including father involvement, infertility, work and family, mothering and care work, housework, family time, single parent families, family life education and gender. This volume will be of interest to scholars in a wide range of disciplines who are interested in expanding their theoretical and empirical understanding of time in families.

This report draws together the findings of a four-year programme of research into families and work. Incorporating 19 research projects, it focuses on three key themes: the effects of work on family life; the employer's perspective on work-family relations and social responsibility; and work and family in relation to the wider community. Drawing out some key issues for policy makers, the author considers: are families coping?; does work keep families out of poverty?; is childcare still a problem for working families?; is work or family people's central interest?; has labour market deregulation changed the profile of work and the workplace?; do we need more regulation?; are social networks disintegrating?; and are work places responding to the needs of the workplace?.

New theoretical models conceptualize families as systems affected by, and effecting change in, reciprocal influences among social, behavioral, and biological processes. Technological breakthroughs make noninvasive assessment of many biological processes available to family researchers. These theoretical and measurement advances have resulted in significant increases in research on family processes and relationships that integrate knowledge from the fields of behavioral endocrinology, behavior genetics, and, to a lesser degree, evolutionary psychology. This review covers a broad spectrum, including the topics of parenthood, early child development, adolescent and middle child development, parent-child relations, courtship and mate selection, and the quality and stability of marital and intimate relations. Our intention is to introduce, by example, the relevance of the biosocial approach, encourage family researchers to consider the application of these ideas to their interests, and increase the participation of family researchers in the next generation of studies.
