A competitor can generally be defined from an environmental- or cognitive perspective.
Within both perspectives a competitor is defined as a rival and cooperation between
competitors is disregarded. Basic arguments in this paper are that we should focus
on a company perspective when defining a competitor and that the notion of rivalry
can be questioned.
The aim is to review existing definitions of a competitor by taking into account
cooperation between competitors. The nature of the paper is conceptual and it concludes
in four propositions.

The objective of the present paper is to propose an integrative and explanatory model
of the high-growth companies (gazelles). The present paper analyses high-growth firms
(also known as gazelles) in the light of three different theoretical focus: (1) model
about firm growth; (2) literature about strategic change and renewal; and (3) entrepreneurship
field. An integrative model of radical growth of gazelle firms is proposed. This
model combines the contributions of each stream of literature and allows the identification
of a wide range of relationships among the main variables.
