The aim of this study was to develop a methodology for companies operating in supplier networks that need improving and also for new ventures starting in the business that could find the competitive advantage of networking. This paper describes methods for developing a supplier network with the help of the strategic supply chain positioning matrix combined with the benchmarking process. The methodology is applicable both to mature existing companies and new ventures. In the implementation phase it is also possible to consider the view of several different stakeholders. The empirical results illustrate the applicability of the methodology in mature companies.

Over the last years the resource-based view (RBV) of strategic management has attracted wide academic and managerial attention. Drawing on RBV literature, this paper analyses the interrelationships between RBV and organizational innovation. The authors examine those aspects of RBV that critically determine the firms capacity to innovate by integrating the relevant theoretical and empirical evidence. A number of contributions setting the ground for future empirical research are provided.

A competitor can generally be defined from an environmental- or cognitive perspective. Within both perspectives a competitor is defined as a rival and cooperation between competitors is disregarded. Basic arguments in this paper are that we should focus on a company perspective when defining a competitor and that the notion of rivalry can be questioned. The aim is to review existing definitions of a competitor by taking into account cooperation between competitors. The nature of the paper is conceptual and it concludes in four propositions.
Negotiated order in inter-organizational relations: Toward an institutional theory of stakeholder negotiations [книги]
Опубликовано на портале: 25-12-2002Juha-Antti Lamberg, Grant T. Savage, Kalle Pajunen
In this study we analyze possible links between new institutional economics and stakeholder management models. The authors' preliminary findings fit with the traditional political organization argument: namely that firms organizational decision-making include explicit and implicit aspects, shaped by institutional and technical constraints, and that decisions have to be balanced from this perspective. As an illustrative empirical material the authors use failed merger and acquisition process between United Airlines and US Airways 2000 2001. The basic theorizing methods used in this paper are the alternate template strategy, and comparative analysis between the two readings (texts). The authors suggestion is that the two theoretical frameworks are complementary, and could be useful when studying / estimating the influence of inter-organizational negotiations to organizational decisionmaking, and especially strategizing.
Masson P. Le From R&D to rid at sekurit Saint Gobain [Текст] : how collaborative research invents new organisation and produces knowledge in management science, Collaborative Research Approaches, EURAM-Conference (2002 ; Stockholm) / P. Le Masson, B.Weil. Stockholm : [s. n], 2002. 15 p. [книга]

Main result of the collaborative research with Sekurit Saint Gobain can be summarised as follows: this research provides a new perspective on corporate R&D management in the context of today intensive innovation; in that perspective knowledge production in research lab is distinct from innovation processes; research management isnt innovation management. Based on our intervention research with Sekurit Saint Gobain Research lab, we give some properties of an I function which differ from research and from development (value evaluation, management processes, managerial objects, economic logic).

This article presents a new method for the development of product ideas, where the initial focus for development is not product ideas, but fantasy worlds. Based on a mental visualization session groups develop fantasy worlds through writing stories in circles. Some of these stories are acted out in scenario play. Phrases from these stories are then used as basis for idea development. This method gives interesting ideas that would be hard to come up with through traditional brainstorming. It helps to get a broader and deeper understanding of the design task and it strongly influences the team spirit and atmosphere. The method is presented through a case with industrial design students in Oslo, where the task was to develop new mouth hygiene products for the Norwegian company Jordan.

The main purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of strategic moves on the likelihood of organizational survival in a population of firms which has undergone continuous and radical transformations in its environment. To this end, the authors propose and test two competitive hypotheses which are the result of two other theoretical perspectives about the consequences of strategic change: the adaptation view (classic strategic management and dynamic capabilities) and the ecological approach. While from the former strategic change has a positive effect on the likelihood of organizational survival, from the ecological approach, strategic change implies an increase in the likelihood of organizational extinction. The sample used to test the two proposed hypotheses is the Spanish private banks population over the period 1983-1997. The results confirm the negative effect of strategic change on the likelihood of organizational extinction, in line with the conclusions of the adaptive perspective and other research carried out in different settings. This paper introduces two important methodological innovations: (a) the definition and measurement of strategic change by using a new cluster algorithm, MCLUST; and (b) the control of the non-observable heterogeneity using panel data models for logit regression.
Organisational Routines and Organisational Learning in Their Cognitive and Political Dimensions [книги]
Опубликовано на портале: 05-01-2003Edward Lorenz
This paper draws on J.R. Commons theory of institutional change to make some suggestions for integrating the political dimension into an analysis of routines and organisational learning, or the processes that change routines. The programmatic advice offered here remains incomplete, though, as the cognitive aspect of routines is examined from the partial angle of the relational and organisation-specific knowledge that individuals require in order to get the job done. In the concluding section of the paper, the author suggest that research based on the cultural-historical approach to distributed cognition may provide the tools for integrating this latter building-block into a Commons inspired account of routines and organisational learning.

One of the most important and difficult challenges in dynamic competitive environments is the question of how the organization is structured in order to achieve efficiency, agility, and adaptability simultaneously. This paper presents an effort at theory development, based on in-depth studies of highly knowledge intensive firms, and we propose three key dimensions driving the complexity of organizing: the extent to which tasks (activities) are predefinable ex ante (formerly described as task characteristics), the degree of interdependence between tasks, subtasks, and the people performing the tasks, and the type of coordination required.

A wide variety of factors influence the quality of strategic decisions. This research considers one such influence, the Strategic Decision Making process. It explores whether previous theoretical propositions hold in quite different organisations in a very different business environment, namely a University in England. The research examines how a strategic problem was addressed. Interviews with the Top Management Team, supported by documentary evidence, are content analysed for the relevance of the propositions in this new environment. Two cases of decision making, relating to the same problem, in a single university suggest that the propositions are indeed relevant.

Archival interviews with 76 popular musicians were content-analyzed for statements about motivation, individuation and attributions of success and failure. Creativity was judged separately by consensual ratings from experts. Results show that although no differences were found in expressions of intrinsic motivation, creative musicians were less motivated to receive extrinsic rewards than uncreative musicians. Creative musicians were also more likely to individuate their products from the products of their peers, but were no more likely to personally individuate themselves. Finally, creative musicians were more likely to display positive illusion tendencies, attributing successes internally and failures to external causes.

Several studies found significant differences between the US American and European management research. Since these studies included only journals published in English language, particularities of German management research are not taken into consideration. In this study a comparative content analysis of all articles in the leading four US American, European (in English language) and German management journals published in 2000 was conducted. The following items were analyzed: research patterns (theoretical versus empirical; and if empirical, nomothetic or idiographic), purpose and data collection methods, and collaborative behavior of authors (international cooperation, national and cooperation within the same university) in the respective geographic areas. On all these variables, clear differences were found.

In this paper we present the results of an exploratory study about specific organizative characteristics that innovative companies possess. This study is part of a wider research work about the innovative behavior of firms (Camelo et al, 2001). The case study about four organizations included in the Andalusian Innovations Network reveals that certain factors do exist which behave as the literature supposes they should, along with other factors which are also worthy of consideration given that they contribute to improving our understanding of innovation within a company.

This paper is based on the assumption that a synthesis of the old Chandlerian structure follows strategy notion and the literature on innovation and learning. The main research question was as follows: To what extent does the level of strategic activity in innovation affect the external and internal structuring directly and to what extent is this effect mediated by learning and innovation processes?
Evaluating Firm Performance: Why Firms Need To Reengineer Their Performance Measurement Systems [книги]
Опубликовано на портале: 11-12-2002Rickie Moore, E.M. Lyon
This paper argues that executives and managers need to reevaluate and to reengineer their performance measurement system to make it more pertinent so that it would serve as an effective trigger as well as a critical piloting and control mechanism for effecting strategic management intervention.
