Winner of the 1998 Taft Labor History Award of the School of Industrial and Labor Relations. One of Choice's Outstanding Academic Books of 1998. In light of recent trends of corporate downsizing and debates over corporate responsibility, Sanford Jacoby offers a timely, comprehensive history of twentieth-century welfare capitalism, that is, the history of nonunion corporations that looked after the economic security of employees. Building on three fascinating case studies of "modern manors" (Eastman Kodak, Sears, and TRW), Jacoby argues that welfare capitalism did not expire during the Depression, as traditionally thought. Rather it adapted to the challenges of the 1930s and became a powerful, though overlooked, factor in the history of the welfare state, the labor movement, and the corporation. "Fringe" benefits, new forms of employee participation, and sophisticated anti-union policies are just some of the outgrowths of welfare capitalism that provided a model for contemporary employers seeking to create productive nonunion workplaces. Although employer paternalism has faltered in recent years, many Americans still look to corporations, rather than to unions or government, to meet their needs. Jacoby explains why there remains widespread support for the notion that corporations should be the keystone of economic security in American society and offers a perspective on recent business trends. Based on extensive research, Modern Manors greatly advances the study of corporate and union power in the twentieth century.

This book is about an industry that has been entirely neglected by social scientists - the maritime car carrier industry. This industry is already globalized, probably more than any other with the possible exception of finance, which attracts a great deal more attention. The book examines the maritime car carrier industry in respect to changes in cost structure and dynamics; in ownership, freight, labour and other markets; in technological innovation and ship design; and in relation to car manufacturers, ship management companies and crewing agents.

This book presents a series of research essays on the state of unions in many different parts of the world. Written by leading researchers in the field it provides insights into the causes of union decline. But it goes beyond historical analyses to investigate the prospects for the future. Can unions organize in segments of the workforce such as the youth, women, low wage workers and those in the informal sector? Can unions network with other organizations such as NGOs nationally and internationally to gain power and influence?

This book comprehensively analyzes the impact of continuing European integration on industrial relations institutions and outcomes. It organizes an immensely rich body of theoretical and empirical material to sustain its core argument that the governance of industrial relations is increasingly multi-level. Cross-national influences are shown to mix with national ones and involve the European sector and company, as well as Community, levels. Competing tendencies towards 'Europeanization', 'Americanization' and 'Re-nationalization' are identified. The approach is multi-disciplinary and truly cross-national. It deals with both the theory and practice of industrial relations in contemporary Europe.

This book presents diverse perspectives on how work and employment are developing in a rapidly changing, contemporary Japan. Using macro- and micro-level data, the authors show both how the Japanese employment system is evolving as well as how the meanings that individual Japanese attach to their work and employment are developing. It is useful to anyone with an interest in work and employment in Japan, from scholars and specialists in HRM and management, to economists, sociologists and anthropologists.

New-York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2005, cерия "International Political Economy Series", 216 с.
Myconos explores the ways in which organized labour has globalized since 1945. Using two 'touchstone' indicators - the extent of cross-border integration, and the autonomy vis-à-vis the state - the book reveals a counterintuitive process: network globalization involves a continuing orientation towards the state. The book not only seeks to identify organized labour's trajectory on the macro plane, but also to provide a more precise meaning of the term 'globalization' as it relates to agency.

How Institutions Evolve: The Political Economy of Skills in Germany, Britain, the United States, and Japan [книги]

The institutional arrangements governing skill formation are widely seen as a key element in the institutional constellations defining ‘varieties of capitalism’ across the developed democracies. This book explores the origins and evolution of such institutions in four countries - Germany, Britain, the United States and Japan. It traces cross-national differences in contemporary training regimes back to the nineteenth century, and specifically to the character of the political settlement achieved among employers in skill-intensive industries, artisans, and early trade unions. The book also tracks evolution and change in training institutions over a century of development, uncovering important continuities through putative ‘break points’ in history. Crucially, it also provides insights into modes of institutional change that are incremental but cumulatively transformative. The study underscores the limits of the most prominent approaches to institutional change, and identifies the political processes through which the form and functions of institutions can be radically reconfigured over time.

How is the contract of employment to remain relevant in the changed world of work? Stella Vettori brilliantly shows that the implied duty of good faith is the ideal vehicle for adapting the contract to changing conditions. Mr Justice A A Landman High Court of South Africa. In light of the global decline in trade unions other means of protecting legitimate worker interests are explored. These include: (i)The socialisation of the law of contract; (ii)the constitutional right to fair labour practices; and (iii)the role of good corporate governance and corporate social responsibility. The conclusion arrived at is that these alternative means of addressing legitimate worker interests could play a valuable role in filling the vacuum left by the worldwide decline of trade unions. The world of work has undergone major changes in the last two decades. This book examines these changes in their international context. It is argued that collective bargaining should no longer be viewed as the most important means of regulating the employment relationship. In the changed world of work such an approach is becoming less relevant. Instead, other means of protecting legitimate worker interests are explored. These include: an adaptation and extension of the general principles of the law of contract; a constitutional right to fair labour practices; and the pursuit of good corporate governance and corporate social responsibility. The conclusion is that these alternative means of addressing legitimate worker interests can play a valuable role in filling the vacuum left by the worldwide decline of trade unions.

This book presents new and authoritative evidence about change at the workplace, using it to cast light on recent debates about the future of work. The basic questions it poses are whether, and how, British workplaces are responding to the challenge of change, and what are the implications of change both for managers and employees. Using up-to-date information from 2000 workplaces, it provides a realistic basis for envisaging the changes through the first decade of the 21st century. It is accessible to a wide audience of policy makers, managers, professionals, students and academics.

How will work be organised in the future? This book challenges many popular myths that limit how we think about the future of work. With its global perspective and critical approach, Re-Thinking the Future of Work provides not only an overview and examination of the array of competing visions, but also a radical rethink about the direction of change. The result is to transcend the conventional narratives and open up the future of work to new possibilities.
