Crossing Boundaries: An Anthology of Women’s Experiences in Sport will help you discover, understand, and appreciate the depth and complexity of the female experience in sport. This is a journey to the center of feminine identity, a survey of past and present voices that lead you into the minds, hearts, and souls of women in sport. The largest literary compilation of writings on and by women in sports, Crossing Boundaries serves as a chronology of attitudes and a catalog of experiences. International in scope, some of these pieces have been translated into English for the first time, thus expanding the sports canon.

All genres are represented-poems, short stories, prose memoirs, journalistic accounts, plays, and novels-to illustrate the broad reach of the literature written by women from a variety of historical and cultural perspectives. This is the female story in and out of sport, one told by outsiders, insiders, spectators, recreational athletes, and transnational sports heroes.

Crossing Boundaries starts with an important historical perspective dating back to Cynisca, the first female victor in the ancient Olympic Games. The book goes on to examine themes which have long been included in women’s writings yet have been long overlooked by both feminists and literary critics. These themes include:
the significance and centrality of the body;
the impact of exclusion and the female reaction to it;
the role of the female spectator as an outsider;
the female identification, connection, and ultimate merger with nature;
the connections women make with others in and through sport;
the athlete’s identity; and
the metaphorical uses of sport.
Because women had for so long been excluded from official sports, relegated for centuries to the role of passive spectator, you will find literature about play, dance, movement, games, and exercise-activities often considered ancillary to and preparatory for the more important activity of sport. Similarly, since the editors extended their search to other countries to expand the limits of the contemporary Western perceptions of sport, you can widen your understanding of the female sporting experience.

The young women who took advantage of the passing of Title IX by the NCAA in 1972 to take part in high school and college sports have now become mothers, and their daughters are following in their footsteps. A new atmosphere of acceptance and encouragement for female athletes of all ages means more and more women are experiencing the joy of sports participation. This book connects generations of women and girls with a vivid, compelling sporting heritage.

This is the most comprehensive collection of articles available on women, sport, and culture. The book features 24 selections from various feminist positions that examine the relation between sport and gender.

The articles in Women, Sport, and Culture serve as a marker of where feminist sport studies has been as a field and a guidepost for what may be the most promising theoretical directions in the future.

Part I introduces and provides an overview of feminist theories that have examined gender, women, and sport. The articles in the section discuss the complexity of the relations among sport, gender, ideology, bodies, and technology.

Part II addresses the gendered organizational order of sport and explores the practices through which women in institutionalized sport are managed. The articles in Part III respond to Kenneth Sheard and Eric Dunning’s idea that sport is a "male preserve"—a site for the production and reproduction of gendered power relations. The section explores how certain practices associated with sport actively degrade women and how women have alternately appropriated and opposed what they perceive to be oppressive and unjust practices.

Part IV examines the role of the media in circulating and legitimizing dominant meanings of sport, women, gendered bodies, and sexuality. Part V looks at heterosexism and homophobia in sport.

Richard Giulianotti
Изд-во: Polity Press, 2004, 264 с.
In this lively new book, Richard Giulianotti provides a critical sociological interpretation of modern sport. As global festivals such as the Olympic games and football's World Cup demonstrate, sport's social, political, economic and cultural significance is becoming increasingly apparent across the world. Its popularity alone means that sociologists cannot ignore sport.Chapter-by-chapter, Giulianotti offers a cogent examination of a range of widely taught sociological theories and issues that relate to sport. These include functionalism, Weberian sociology, Marxism, postmodern sociology, and globalisation. The author's use of an international range of case studies and research, about a wide variety of sports, helps to make his account especially accessible to undergraduate readers. 'Sport: a critical sociology' will therefore have strong appeal to upper-level undergraduates on courses such as sport and leisure studies, cultural studies, and modern social theory.

New York: Routledge, 2001, 256 с.
This text, intended for undergraduates on various education and sport related degree courses, covers the key, current issues in the field of sociology of sport and physical education. The first section of the text covers the importance of sport in culture, its theoretical background, and methodological issues in research. The main body of the text then discusses issues including the sporting body, participation and socialization into sport, the hidden curriculum, critical pedagogy, and sport and the media. Laker discusses in depth gender, race and ethnicity, class, and equality, and he looks at sport and the media, and the involvement of politics. The chapters are each rounded off with challenging 'reflection' questions, activities and tasks for the reader to fulfil.

Klaus V. Meier, William J. Morgan
Champaign: Human Kinetics, 1988, 546 с.
The aim of this work is to present an anthology devoted to the philosophy of sport covering classic and recent literature. The intended audience is undergraduate and graduate students and scholars interested in sport in general. There are six parts. As an avid reader of the philosophy of sport, the author "find it quite relevant to any interest in parapsychology. In both parapsychology and sport the primary goal is to transcend physical limits. Moreover, ESP and PK tests, both informal and formal, can be classed in a game paradigm and some of them have been deliberately devised as games or forms of competition. In this connection, the chapters in Parts II and III are especially relevant. In PK, the analogy between parapsychology and sport is more apt. It is my guess that at the limits of human possibility where new records are set wherein humans transcend all previous limits and are the first to do so some form of psi may be involved, though it is not possible to separate it from the many physical, physiological, psychological, social, and even sociological factors involved. For these reasons this book provides a very useful introduction to the philosophy of sport".

William J. Morgan
Изд-во: University of Illinois Press, 1994, 288 с.
William Morgan argues here that leftist theories have lost their critical edge and can no longer be counted on to transform sport society. Assessing these theories, he goes on to propose a new, reconstructed critical theory of sport, invoking the logical integrity of sport itself and the deliberations of sporting practice communities. The degradation of modern sport - its commercialization, its trivialization, its cult of athletic stars and celebrities, and its manipulation by the media - has led to numerous calls for its transformation. "Approaching the relations of sport and society with a truly philosophic mind, Morgan has important things to say that no one else has said with quite the same degree of detailed thoughtfulness. Leftist Theories of Sport is a critique not only of sports but also of contemporary society." - Allen Guttmann, author of The Olympics: A History of the Modern Games.

This ground-breaking new book is the first to offer a comprehensive theory and method for a critical sociology of sport. It argues that class, political economy, hegemony and other concepts central to the radical tradition are essential for framing, understanding and changing social and political relations within sport and between sport and society. It takes the reader through the big themes in the discipline, including social history, sociological and political theory, comparative research and ethnography, this book is essential reading for any serious student of sport.
