Eric Ghysels, Denise R. Osborn
Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2003
Eric Ghysels and Denise R. Osborn provide a thorough and timely review of the recent developments in the econometric analysis of seasonal economic time series, summarizing a decade of theoretical advances in the area. The authors discuss the asymptotic distribution theory for linear nonstationary seasonal stochastic processes. They also cover the latest contributions to the theory and practice of seasonal adjustment, together with its implications for estimation and hypothesis testing. Moreover, a comprehensive analysis of periodic models is provided, including stationary and nonstationary cases. The book concludes with a discussion of some nonlinear seasonal and periodic models. The treatment is designed for an audience of researchers and advanced graduate students.

A classic text in the field, this new edition features a new co-author and provides a well-balanced and comprehensive study of current econometric theory and practice for undergraduate or graduate study. Traditional topics are carefully blended with newer techniques and trends. While the authors of this text assume students have taken a basic course in statistics, they provide a complete appendix on basic statistical theory for those who may need a refresher. In addition, the authors include in an appendix a review of all relevant topics in matrix algebra. An innovative feature of this book is the detailed descriptions of several pieces of applied econometric research. These applications use real-life data contained on the data disk which accompanies the text, giving students a hands-on experience working with data sets.

This book provides a compact, thirteen-chapter presentation. Coverage includes clear explanations of the derivation of econometric methods and practices. The authors then go on to show how, in practice, these methods apply to estimation and testing of economic models.

Applications are built upon US economic data, all of which is contained on the data disk packaged with the text.

However, it is a well written, readable account of the model specification testing problem, and as such would justify its inclusion on the shelves of academic libraries

The authors are leading scholars in the fields and introduce the latest models for analysing marketing data. The papers are representative of the types of problems and methods that are used within the field of marketing. Marketing focuses on the interaction between the firm and the consumer. Economics encompasses this interaction as well as many others. Economics, along with psychology and sociology, provides a theoretical foundation for marketing. Given the applied nature of marketing research, measurement and quantitative issues arise frequently. Quantitative marketing tends to rely heavily upon statistics and econometrics. However, quantitative marketing can place a different emphasis upon the problem than econometrics, even when using the same techniques. A basic difference between quantitative marketing research and econometrics tends to be the pragmatism that is found in many marketing studies. Another important motivating factor in marketing research is the type of data that is available. Applied econometrics tends to rely heavily on data collected by governmental organizations. In contrast marketing often uses data collected by private firms or marketing research firms. Observational and survey data are quite similar to those used in econometrics. However, the remaining types of data, panel and transactional, can look quite different from what may be familiar to econometricians. The automation and computerization of much of the sales transaction process leaves an audit trail that results in huge quanitities of data. A popular area of study is the use of scanner data collected at the checkout stand using bar code readers. Methods that work for small data sets may not work well in these larger data sets. In addition, new sources of data, such as clickstream data from a web site, will offer new challenges. This volume addresses these and related issues.

Getting accurate data on less developed countries has created great problems for studying these areas. Yet until recently students of development economics have relied on standard econometrics texts, which assume a Western context. «Econometrics and Data Analysis for Developing Countries» solves this problem. It will be essential reading for all advanced students of development economics.

The relentless decline in the prices of information technology (IT) has steadily enhanced the role of IT investment as a source of economic growth in the United States. Productivity growth in IT-producing industries has gradually risen in importance, and a productivity revival has taken place in the rest of the economy. In this book Dale Jorgenson shows that IT provides the foundation for the resurgence of American economic growth.

Richard A. Posner
New York: Aspen Law & Business, 2002, 747 с.
This is the fifth edition of a textbook-treatise first published in 1973. Its subject is economic analysis of legal rules and institutions. It differs from other textbooks on the subject in the breadth of its coverage and in the emphasis placed on the legal regulation of nonmarket behavior - not only the familiar (to economists) examples such as drug addiction, thefts of art, sexual acts, surrogate motherhood, rescues at sea, flag desecration, and religious observances. It also differs in the principle of organization. The book is organized around legal rather than economic concepts. This approach enables the law to be seen, grasped, and studied as a system - a system that economic analysis can illuminate, reveal as coherent, and in places improve. By the same token, the approach enables economics to be seen as a tool for understanding and reforming social practices, rather than as a formal system of daunting mathematical complexity. The explication of economics in this book stresses the unity, simplicity, and power, but also the subtlety, of economic principles. The presentation is unformal, and no prior acquaintance with economics, or mathematical competence, on the part of the reader is assumed.

Yoram Barzel
Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1997
This study offers a unified theoretical structure to analyze exchange, formation of economic rights, and organization. The cost of measuring accurately all assets' attributes is prohibitive. Therefore, rights are never fully delineated and others (using theft, adverse selection, free riding, and shirking) may appropriate one's assets. The central question is how people allocate resources and organize their activities to maximize the value of their rights. The approach emphasizes nonmarket constraints, but is also applicable to market economies. It is useful for analyzing allocations within organizations as well as allocation by voting and charity. Chapters have been extended for this second edition and a new chapter devoted to the firm has been added.

Thrainn Eggertsson
Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1990
An important new research program has developed in economics that extends neoclassical economic theory in order to examine the effects of institutions on economic behavior. The body of work emerging from this new line of inquiry includes contributions from the various branches of economic theory, such as the economics of property rights, the theory of the firm, cliometrics and law and economics. This book is the first comprehensive survey of this research program, which the author terms "neoinstitutional economics." The author proposes a unified approach to this research, integrating the work of various contributors and emphasizing the common principles of inquiry that tie the work together. The theoretical discussion is accomplished by empirical studies dealing with a whole range of institutions and economic systems.

Economic Development is a subject that came into being only after World War II with the dawn of the postcolonial era and the growing disparities between north and south, rich and poor, developed and less developed countries. Those who wish to follow the lively debates that characterize this field will find no surer guide than the essays in this book.

The effects of a government's budget on society and the political economy are of considerable concern to economists as well as to consumers and taxpayers. The original contributions in this book analyze all of the budget's components expenditures, revenues, the deficit - with a special emphasis on issues that have assumed increasing importance over the last decade or so, such as intergenerational transfers of debt and declines in corporate tax revenues.

Chapters deal with both microeconomic and macroeconomic aspects of the effects of budgets, and demonstrate how budgetary policies affect inflation, efficiency, the balance of payments, exchange rates, and the decision-making process.

The contributions are grouped into five sections. The first covers the revenue side of the budget - taxation policy and its interaction with emigration, corporate tax revenues, personal income taxes, and fiscal policies. The second takes up intergenerational transfers, consumption decisions, and Ricardian equivalence and neutrality. Budget deficits and optimal policies, inflation and its relationship to budget deficits are examined in parts three and four.

The book concludes by looking at stabilization in open economies, and includes treatments of the consequences of balance-of-payments crises, exchange rate management under uncertainty, and foreign exchange operations.

Economic Evolution explores three of the main approaches within the new institutional economics: the new theory of the firm, Nelson and Winter's evolutionary economics and game theoretic accounts of spontaneous evolution. Close analysis reveals that the approaches differ on such fundamental issues as the meaning of terms like 'institution' and 'evolution'. However, the book also uncovers two evolutionary mechanisms that govern processes of economic change in all of these approaches.
