This text is the most powerful text on capitalism author has read and brilliantly synthesizes the ideas of the Austrian economists as well as defends most of the significant contributions of the classical and Austrian economists since Adam Smith.

This graduate text provides an intuitive but rigorous treatment of contemporary methods used in microeconometric research. The book makes clear that applied microeconometrics is about the estimation of marginal and treatment effects, and that parametric estimation is simply a means to this end. It also clarifies the distinction between causality and statistical association.
The book focuses specifically on cross section and panel data methods. Population assumptions are stated separately from sampling assumptions, leading to simple statements as well as to important insights. The unified approach to linear and nonlinear models and to cross section and panel data enables straightforward coverage of more advanced methods. The numerous end-of-chapter problems are an important component of the book. Some problems contain important points not fully described in the text, and others cover new ideas that can be analyzed using tools presented in the current and previous chapters.

These applications use real-life data contained on the data disk which accompanies the text, giving students a hands-on experience working with data sets.

However, it is a well written, readable account of the model specification testing problem, and as such would justify its inclusion on the shelves of academic libraries

The authors are leading scholars in the fields and introduce the latest models for analysing marketing data. The papers are representative of the types of problems and methods that are used within the field of marketing. Marketing focuses on the interaction between the firm and the consumer. Economics encompasses this interaction as well as many others. Economics, along with psychology and sociology, provides a theoretical foundation for marketing. Given the applied nature of marketing research, measurement and quantitative issues arise frequently. Quantitative marketing tends to rely heavily upon statistics and econometrics. However, quantitative marketing can place a different emphasis upon the problem than econometrics, even when using the same techniques. A basic difference between quantitative marketing research and econometrics tends to be the pragmatism that is found in many marketing studies. Another important motivating factor in marketing research is the type of data that is available. Applied econometrics tends to rely heavily on data collected by governmental organizations. In contrast marketing often uses data collected by private firms or marketing research firms. Observational and survey data are quite similar to those used in econometrics. However, the remaining types of data, panel and transactional, can look quite different from what may be familiar to econometricians. The automation and computerization of much of the sales transaction process leaves an audit trail that results in huge quanitities of data. A popular area of study is the use of scanner data collected at the checkout stand using bar code readers. Methods that work for small data sets may not work well in these larger data sets. In addition, new sources of data, such as clickstream data from a web site, will offer new challenges. This volume addresses these and related issues.

This textbook teaches some of the basic econometric methods and the underlying assumptions behind them. It also includes a simple and concise treatment of more advanced topics in time-series, spatial correlation, limited dependent variables and panel data models, as well as specification testing, Gauss-Newton regressions and regression diagnostics. Some of the strengths of this book lie in presenting difficult material in a simple, yet rigorous manner. The exercises contain theoretical problems that should supplement the understanding of the material in each chapter. In addition, the book has a set of empirical illustrations demonstrating some of the basic results learned in each chapter. The empirical exercises are solved using several econometric software packages.
