On June 1, 1998, president Clinton approved a 3-year quota on wheat gluten imports from Australia, the European Union (E.U.), and all other nonexcluded countries. The quota will be reviewed for possible extension for up to additional 5 years. The potential for extensions is an important reason to develop a better economic understanding of this industry and the effectiveness of the implemented quotas. This thesis contains two distinct studies related to the U.S. wheat gluten industry. The purpose of the first study was to provide background on the gluten trade dispute, decipher the qualit

In recent years the development community has pressured LDCs to privatize agro- industries. This pressure stems from poor public enterprise performance and an ideological shift. However, public enterprises mitigate market failures. The major objective of this study is to measure the impact of privatizing the Nepalese yak cheese industry. To achieve the objective, public and private behavior are determined. The impacts of privatization stem from changes in monopsony behavior and institutional constraints that differ between the public and private sectors.

Concern about externalities associated with pesticide use in developing countries has motivated the development of integrated pest management (IPM) programs in these areas. In the Philippines, the IPM Collaborative Research Support Program (IPM CRSP) was established to specifically address the widespread misuse of pesticides in the rice-vegetable systems of Nueva Ecija, one of the major rice and onion producing regions in the country. IPM CRSP initiatives include research on the optimal use of pesticides, complementary weed control strategies, and alternative cultural and biological con

Concerns about the harmful effects of pesticides on the environment, human health, and wildlife have led to research and promotion of integrated pest management (IPM) strategies. Recently, an IPM program was introduced in the Albanian olive sector through the USAID-funded global IPM-CRSP project to develop improved olive IPM technologies. This study develops and applies a protocol for integrated economic impact assessment of olive pest management strategies designed by the IPM-CRSP project in Albania. The main components of the integrated approach for economic impact assessment of olive

Vertical integration has received much attention in the last 25 years and there are well-known theories that explain this behavior. However, the one common thread that runs through virtually all of this research is the assumption of private property rights. Very little attention has been paid to how firms behave when the property rights structure under which they operate changes. The commercial fishing industry is a prime example of an industry where property rights have shifted. Due to problems of over-fishing and over-capitalization, economists have championed the conversion of fisher

Bridge forecasts of the information contained in the USDA Сattle on Feed (CO F) report (cattle on feed, placements, and marketings) from 36 private industry analysts and a composite forecast were evaluated to determine an appropriate proxy for anticipated information. The majority of forecasts were unbiased and nearly all were efficient. Unbiasedness and efficiency were rejected most often for marketings forecasts and least often for placements forecasts. The composite forecast was biased, but efficient for all variables forecasted. The composite forecast was generally superior to forec

Price variability for commodities, mounting machinery and input costs, shifting farm policy environment, and changes in the risk environment facing producers have all contributed to the need for improved understanding of risk management at the farm level. The objective of the current study is to use farm-level, cross-section data from the Kansas Farm Management Association record keeping system, to determine whether the variability of net farm income (NFI) and rate of return on equity (ROE) are significantly influenced by farm size, diversification, cost efficiency, debt management, and

The farm-to-retail price spread has widened in the 1990s due to increased costs associated with additional services and marketing provided by food processors. Producers have begun to search intensively for methods to maintain the larger portion of this price spread, essentially retaining a greater share of the consumers’ food dollar and becoming more profitable. Vertical coordination by producers has been identified as a sustainable means of enhancing the value of producers’ operations. Two methods of vertical coordination that have become more popular are ownership of closed

Flows of foreign direct investment (FDI) are increasingly seen as a very important channel to the transfer of technology and capital for developing countries. Developing countries compete vigorously among themselves to attract greater volumes of foreign direct investment as to multinational food and beverage corporations to seek out emerging markets. The situation is analogous to the development in the Latin Americas and the Caribbean. This thesis provides the review of the growing body of literature on the determinants and models of FDI, and an empirical to test hypotheses about FDI mo

The Government of Senegal is attempting to liberalize the groundnut market. In the past, this market was highly regulated with government-set producer prices, groundnut oil processing mills owned by parastatals, and requirements that all groundnuts be sold to these quasi-governmental organizations. In recent years, these rules are being relaxed, and farmers are allowed to sell groundnuts on the open market. However, farmers continue to sell most of their groundnuts, as before, to the mills. This study attempts to shed light on the effects of this market liberalization. First, an attemp

The objective of this research was to create an industry-targeting model for the Great Plains region. The model estimates the probability of 100 aggregate industry sectors locating in any of the 430 counties in six Great Plains states over the 1995 to 2003 time period. The probabilities are based on twenty-three county characteristics that were identified as important determinants of industry location. The model may help local economic development officials identify viable industries for their recruitment efforts. This research consisted of constructing and evaluating two distinct models

The objective of this study is to determine whether there are inadequacies in the rural financial markets of Virginia. The analysis is based on data from a survey of farm and non-farm small businesses, in five rural counties in Virginia. A Probit model is used to determine whether the financing difficulty encountered by small rural businesses is significantly determined by non-risk characteristics of users of capital and/or non-risk characteristics of local capital markets. Four variables representing different aspects of financing difficulty are used as the dependent variables in each

Adequate access to public goods plays an important role in the economic and rural development of any country. For the transition countries, however, providing public goods is particularly problematic, owing to several factors associated with the transition process itself ,e.g. economic recession and a charge in ownership of local public goods. Taking Russia as an example, this study examines the effect of the transition process on rural households’ access to public goods. With reference to education and health care, household access to public goods is addressed in terms of communi

Until recently, beef has primarily been a homogeneous and unbranded product. Partially because of non-differentiated nature of beef, consumers have shifted consumption to other meet and non-meat food items that identify particular quality or functional characteristics. In light of the demand decline, the beef industry is in need of information regarding consumer and retailer demand for quality differentiated beef as they attempt to enhance beef sales. This dissertation used three alternative methodologies to examine the demand for quality differentiated beef. The first study used an expe

Trade relations between United States and Mexico are becoming increasingly important and interrelated ever since January 1, 1994 when Mexico, Canada and the US entered into the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Mexico is a net importer of agricultural products and imports most of its corn and sorghum from the U.S. In 2001, corn exports increased to 12% and sorghum exports increased to 82% with respect to total U.S. world exports of corn and sorghum. In the case за corn, trade barriers exist that add the measure of uncertainty to the transaction between exporter and importer
