This research explores how social class works in the professional middle class with White and Black women and Latinas. Using focus groups, homogeneous by race/ethnic group and class biography, to investigate their experiences, I compared women who come from less privileged classes with those who have always been middle class. My primary questions were to discover how they became the women they are today and how they experience their professional lives, predominantly in the workplace. This dissertation uses the National Welfare Rights Organization (NWRO) as a case study of the politics of poverty. It argues that, in a society that denies the very existence of class, poor Americans face almost insurmountable challenges when they try to mobilize around their own poverty.

This dissertation examines the social construction of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside neighbourhood since 1950, challenging the recent narrative of urban decline which has situated the area as a skid row district where an influx of drug addicts has displaced a poor but respectable working class community, inducing a spiral of decline.

Korea and Thailand are regarded as tiger economies for their success in achieving impressive economic growth during the last three decades. Along with their illustrious growth performances, both economies have experienced significant changes in inequality and poverty over the last decade of the twentieth century. This thesis deals with these three phenomena examining both the methodological and empirical aspects with focus on Korea and Thailand. The study uses unit-record micro data that include the Family Income and Expenditure Survey and the Survey of the Economically Active Population
