The 1989 and 1993 New York City mayoral elections were decided by only 97,000 votes an extremely small margin. Both elections pitted David Dinkins and Rudolph Giuliani against each other; approximately the same proportion of New Yorkers came to the polls. This dissertation attempts to show that pessimistic outlook of middle class white New Yorkers swung the election toward Giuliani. He was able to tap into the pessimism of this key group, motivating them to come to the polls and vote for change. This dissertation will analyze Census data, cross-sectional survey data and election distric

This research is concerned with a description of the system of social stratification in the context of a medium-sized Turkish town called Arde en, located in the Black Sea region. Using a Weberian analytical approach, the author analyses three dimensions of stratification which are related to the distribution of power: class, status and command; and examines the degree of correspondence between these dimensions. However, attention is given primarily to class and status. Although the third dimension of stratification (command) is also analysed it is treated as supplementary to class. A f

This study attempts to test a portion of sociologist William Julius Wilson's theory of the concentration of poverty and social isolation by using data from the East Texas Fair Housing Service Center's (ETFHSC) Housing Mobility Program. This court-ordered program uses Section 8 vouchers to move African Americans from segregated public housing into working and middle class, predominantly white, neighborhoods. The participants in this program vary in several ways that are related to the concentration of poverty and social isolation. If Wilson's theory is correct, those who have experienced

This dissertation evaluates consumption-based poverty and inequality in the United States using Consumer Expenditure Survey (CEX) data for the period 1984-1998. Slesnicks's poverty and inequality analysis (1993, 1994) is replicated, amplified and extended into the late 1990s. The poverty and inequality measures rest upon micro-theoretic foundations of utility maximizing behavior and demand. Two parallel theoretical and empirical frameworks are used. The Translog model (Christensen, Jorgenson, and Lau, 1975) with expenditure-independent equivalence scales is used to replicate and extend

This research aims to examine the measurement and conceptualization of poverty at a local level and to show how poverty is not a monolithic concept, even within one small community. In addition, this dissertation will show how detailed knowledge at the local level can be used to enhance the understanding of state/provincial or national level statistics and be used to help better target poverty alleviation programs toward more vulnerable populations. Finally, I will also discuss peoples' conceptualizations of poverty and how they may affect the implementation of poverty alleviation progra

This dissertation investigates the role of a new form of community development initiative to address these social problems and challenging social forces that created it. This dissertation is based on a three-year ethnography of community development in a low-income neighborhood of Philadelphia. To learn about the life and culture of the neighborhood, I moved into the area, participated in local community events, volunteered at community-based organizations, visited local churches and interviewed long term and recent residents. I utilized a grounded theory approach to develop the analytic
