This dissertation offers a fresh exploration into an old subject: racial inequality. By focusing directly on the residential environment of the black middle class, and by employing a number of data sets that incorporate information from 1970 to 1990, I study the neighborhoods of middle-class blacks relative to middle-class whites. Overall, I find that middle-class African Americans have experienced disadvantaged neighborhood conditions compared to middle-class whites throughout the two decades under study. Though this is not necessarily surprising to anyone familiar with the contours of

The main goal of this study is to examine the characteristics of the networks of Tehrani men and women (structure, composition, and content), their effects upon the flow of resources, and the association between the structure of network and marital relationships. In addition to studying the effects of network structure on housework division, this thesis examines other possible explanatory factors (time availability, gender role ideology, and the power resources of couples) in order to identify the effects of network characteristics on division of housework. This thesis focuses on differ

This research aims to examine the measurement and conceptualization of poverty at a local level and to show how poverty is not a monolithic concept, even within one small community. In addition, this dissertation will show how detailed knowledge at the local level can be used to enhance the understanding of state/provincial or national level statistics and be used to help better target poverty alleviation programs toward more vulnerable populations. Finally, I will also discuss peoples' conceptualizations of poverty and how they may affect the implementation of poverty alleviation progra

The act of voting represents many different things: democratic governance, public opinion, civic duty, attitudes, values, beliefs, resources, and more; yet, this act has been on a steady decline in presidential elections since 1960. Researchers have drawn significant conclusions as to why voter turnout has declined such as institutional barriers (registration laws), a decline in partisanship, and political attitudes such as political trust, political efficacy, and political interest. However, when these conclusions were drawn, most researchers analyzed the electorate as a whole rather t

The triumph of the welfare state: The comparative political

2001
Understanding the nature and causes of poverty in Western nations from 1969 to 1997, is the focus of this dissertation. In chapter 2, I critique Sociology for relying on deficient poverty measures and advocate for more theoretically and methodologically rigorous measures. Using data from the Luxembourg Income Study, I estimate three indices of poverty, the Interval, Ordinal and Sum of Ordinals, for 70-71 cases. In Chapter 3, I outline and critique the liberal economic explanation, which dominates current discussions of poverty, and call for a broader, more sociological approach. In Chap

Using a framework that examined stratification from an intersection of sex, race/ethnicity, age, and socio-economic factors (SES), this study traces the development of computer use and ownership from the early 1980s to the late 1990s. Current Population Survey data from 1984, 1989, 1993, and 1997 are analyzed using descriptive statistics. The most interesting finding was that respondents who used work computers were much more likely to own and use home computers. This impact was affected, however, by occupation, education level, and race/ethnicity. In the highest SES there were few diffe

The goal was to investigate salient factors that hindered and enhanced their life career development process, which was defined from a holistic, developmental, and dynamic systems perspective to provide a framework for examining multiple inner dimensions (intellectual, emotional, spiritual, and career development), and outer environments (school, family, community) over the lifespan. Depth interviewing and the use of story were the primary methods for gathering data. The data analysis revealed the following inhibitors: broken relationships and trust with childhood primary caregivers; la

This dissertation represents the only historical study to date to recount the history of the War on Poverty in Texas. The study describes the dimensions of poverty in the state in the mid-twentieth century; explains the development of the various programs of the Office of Economic Opportunity (OEO), the primary anti-poverty agency of the Johnson administration; and traces how these programs were put into practice in Texas.

This dissertation investigates the role of a new form of community development initiative to address these social problems and challenging social forces that created it. This dissertation is based on a three-year ethnography of community development in a low-income neighborhood of Philadelphia. To learn about the life and culture of the neighborhood, I moved into the area, participated in local community events, volunteered at community-based organizations, visited local churches and interviewed long term and recent residents. I utilized a grounded theory approach to develop the analytic

Social inequality and the politics of production: Americans' attitudes toward workplace
democracy [диссертация]

Vincent Edward Collom, Edna Bonacich
UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, RIVERSIDE , 2002
This project is an analysis of Americans' attitudes toward three forms of workplace democracy. National survey data from 1991 are employed to investigate the relationship between the bases of social inequality under contemporary capitalism and this alternative which potentially ameliorates workplace inequality. Race, class, and gender are hypothesized to be major determinants of attitudes toward workplace democracy. Numerous indicators of class position are examined and the class criteria which tap into production relations are most salient. A more holistic class location analysis demons

Medicine is and has been a highly prestigious profession. It both produces and reproduces members of the upper class. Its high status has long been accepted as legitimate by society due to the tremendous sacrifices its members make both in the length and difficulty of their training and the content of their work. However, medicine is currently facing problems. It is under siege by managed care organizations and the federal government, which not only want to regulate fees that physicians receive but to intervene in their professional decision making. One of the initiatives currently unde

The Educational Pathways of White Working Class Students [диссертация]

2002
In this dissertation I examine the educational trajectories of a group that has been neglected in recent educational research: white working-class students. Rather than comparing these students to middle-class students, as has been done in past research, I compare the students by their outcomes, examining the differences between those working-class students who attain high school diplomas only, those who pursue associate's degrees, and those who pursue bachelor's degrees. Using data from the National Education Longitudinal Study, I examine overall differences between the outcome groups w

This dissertation explores the determinants and socioeconomic consequences of inequality in material assets among middle-aged American households. Using survey data from the Health and Retirement study (HRS), and utilizing suitable quantitative techniques, this study establishes a conceptual ground which brings back the critical role private property and kinship relations play in contemporary stratification processes. This study shows that in the contemporary post-transitional, multi-asset society, two social mechanisms of closure and exclusion, marriage and inheritance ;intervene in th
