This study sought to determine whether social class contributed to differences in moral justifications and moral decision-making. The study also sought to determine whether particular situational variables, namely the nature of the relationship between individuals depicted in a moral dilemma and the severity of the grievance depicted in a moral dilemma, had an influence upon moral decision-making and moral justifications. Results found significant differences between the lower-income and middle-upper income participants in both their moral decisions and in their moral justifications. Mor

This study examined Wilson's hypothesis that economic restructuring accompanied by spatial redistribution of employment opportunities coupled with rising skills requirements for employment provide an explanation for the increasing concentration of metropolitan area poverty in its central city. This study also assesses the influence that racism, represented by racial residential segregation (Index of Dissimilarity), may have on the distribution of metropolitan poverty.

The purpose of this study was to determine social class positions as derived from career and educational aspirations and expectations and to identify barriers affecting career and educational achievement. The research study was focused on students from a small geographically isolated community. These students were bused 20 miles to a high school outside their county and have historically had a high dropout rate. Individual interviews were conducted with 32 students and former students and their parents, as well as eight teachers from the high school. The student pool was evenly divided

This dissertation addresses the question: What are the determinants of (and impediments to) the development of ideological sophistication? Using National Election Studies data, I develop two individual-level measures of ideological sophistication, emphasizing ideological consistency and stability. Bivariate tests demonstrate support for several hypotheses concerning the stratification of ideological sophistication according to various demographic, social-structural, and psychological and behavioral traits. Multiple regression analyses emphasize the relative importance of the psychologica

A holistic and comprehensive theory is developed in the study which attributes societal stratification to endogenous and exogenous factors as well as the interactions between the two sets of factors. Empirical analyses based on bivariate and multiple regression modelings confirm key theoretical assumptions which attribute societal stratification to a state's internal dynamics of development as well as status in the world systems. Interaction of development status and world systems position produce different stratification effects in different clusters of countries. These findings of the

What factors are behind a couple's redistribution of labor hours after they become parents? I come at this issue from two directions, considering first the rise in the proportion of housework hours women do, and then the drop on their proportion of employment hours. First, why don't women resist a division of housework in which they do twice what their husbands do? And second, why do women choose to decrease their employment hours so dramatically while men's hours register virtually no change? In chapter 2, I ask whether women employ a particular equity principle in judging whether the

The 1989 and 1993 New York City mayoral elections were decided by only 97,000 votes an extremely small margin. Both elections pitted David Dinkins and Rudolph Giuliani against each other; approximately the same proportion of New Yorkers came to the polls. This dissertation attempts to show that pessimistic outlook of middle class white New Yorkers swung the election toward Giuliani. He was able to tap into the pessimism of this key group, motivating them to come to the polls and vote for change. This dissertation will analyze Census data, cross-sectional survey data and election distric

This dissertation evaluates consumption-based poverty and inequality in the United States using Consumer Expenditure Survey (CEX) data for the period 1984-1998. Slesnicks's poverty and inequality analysis (1993, 1994) is replicated, amplified and extended into the late 1990s. The poverty and inequality measures rest upon micro-theoretic foundations of utility maximizing behavior and demand. Two parallel theoretical and empirical frameworks are used. The Translog model (Christensen, Jorgenson, and Lau, 1975) with expenditure-independent equivalence scales is used to replicate and extend

To study how social inequality has influenced the health status of the Mexican population at the individual and the state level between 1990 and 1996. Explore the pathways through which social inequality affect health. Identify policy options to address social inequality in Mexico. Theoretical framework. Social inequality is understood here as a structural feature of society that has negative consequences on health. From this perspective, the underlying assumption is that health differentials across the social spectrum are closely related to the structure of a society, which in turn is

This dissertation generates possible explanations for conflicting claims in the literature on the economic populist sentiment (or incipient class consciousness) of the contemporary American middle class. It asserts that social and political analysts have depicted the middle class as either: (1)basically accepting the socioeconomic status quo, (2)substantially discontent with growing class inequality and increasingly ready to resist it, or (3)containing a simple conglomeration of both inclinations. The study analyzes in-depth interviews with eighteen ordinary middle class individuals fro

This study attempts to test a portion of sociologist William Julius Wilson's theory of the concentration of poverty and social isolation by using data from the East Texas Fair Housing Service Center's (ETFHSC) Housing Mobility Program. This court-ordered program uses Section 8 vouchers to move African Americans from segregated public housing into working and middle class, predominantly white, neighborhoods. The participants in this program vary in several ways that are related to the concentration of poverty and social isolation. If Wilson's theory is correct, those who have experienced

The five objectives of this study were to examine whether individuals with characteristics associated with lower poverty exit rates were more likely to be in poverty upon becoming young adults, to assess the impact of left-censoring on poverty exit rate estimation, to examine if rural residency was associated with lower poverty exit rates than urban residency, to determine if time-varying variables associated with exit from and reentry into poverty were symmetric, and to assess the relationship between rural-to-urban migration and timing of exit from poverty, all among young adults (age
