This dissertation presents the results of three investigations of child poverty in New Mexico. Chapter two examines the role income disparity plays in exacerbating the health consequences of poverty by investigating the connection between income disparity and morbidity and mortality in children. Chapter three uses 1999 survey data to examine the determinants of preventative care and usual source of healthcare for insured children in New Mexico. Finally, chapter four presents the results of simulations conducted for several proposed tax-based programs designed to decrease child poverty.

Contemporary welfare research recognizes the increasing importance of norms and values in shaping popular assessment of social policy and the need to more fully incorporate cultural beliefs into the empirical study of public opinion. This research is a comparative study of factors influencing public attitudes towards government policies in fourteen countries: Australia, Bulgaria, Canada, former Czechoslovakia, former East Germany, Great Britain, Hungary, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Russia, the United States, and former West Germany. I use data from the 1992 International Social S

This research explores how social class works in the professional middle class with White and Black women and Latinas. Using focus groups, homogeneous by race/ethnic group and class biography, to investigate their experiences, I compared women who come from less privileged classes with those who have always been middle class. My primary questions were to discover how they became the women they are today and how they experience their professional lives, predominantly in the workplace. By focusing on motivational influences, obstacles and resources, I was able to reveal the workings of cl

In this dissertation, open-systems theories concerning organizational emergence, development, and coexistence are employed to generate research themes that explain the EPO landscape in the Turkish clothing industry. These themes are explored through a combination of quantitative and qualitative research methods, including

This dissertation uses the National Welfare Rights Organization (NWRO) as a case study of the politics of poverty. It argues that, in a society that denies the very existence of class, poor Americans face almost insurmountable challenges when they try to mobilize around their own poverty.

This dissertation examines the social construction of Vancouver's Downtown Eastside neighbourhood since 1950, challenging the recent narrative of urban decline which has situated the area as a skid row district where an influx of drug addicts has displaced a poor but respectable working class community, inducing a spiral of decline.

Korea and Thailand are regarded as tiger economies for their success in achieving impressive economic growth during the last three decades. Along with their illustrious growth performances, both economies have experienced significant changes in inequality and poverty over the last decade of the twentieth century. This thesis deals with these three phenomena examining both the methodological and empirical aspects with focus on Korea and Thailand. The study uses unit-record micro data that include the Family Income and Expenditure Survey and the Survey of the Economically Active Population

Asian Pacific Americans (APAs) have often been excluded from racial discourse pertaining to educational opportunities because of a lack of belief that there is need to address the educational issues of this population. The APA population has also been misrepresented by way of categorization and treatment as a single, homogeneous racial group when, in fact, the APA population is quite diverse with ethnic sub-groups that encounter different social and institutional experiences. Using Critical Race Theory (CRT) as a guiding framework with the structural elements of Social Capital Theory, th

The confounded relationship between race and social class categorizations has been noted by social psychologists for decades. For example, Jones states, "One of the big difficulties we have is disentangling race from class". Though racial stereotyping and prejudice phenomena have received considerable attention, the important element of social class has been largely ignored. Two studies used the statement recognition paradigm (Taylor et al., 1978) to assess the categorization of targets crossed on race (White, Black) and social class (lower-class, middle-class) dimensions. The moderatin

This study of race stratification was undertaken in three articles concerning three distinct outcomes: wage differentials, area- and population-specific homicide rate differentials, and physiological distress and cardiovascular disease. The articles, although substantively distinct, fit together to explore stratification by race and some detrimental consequences of racism on these elements of well-being for African Americans. The first paper lays the foundation for the theme by establishing the hierarchy of racial stratification among five race/ethnic groups in the American labor force

Institutional theory argues that the stratification system of a society is built upon its dominant mode of economic integration, and thereby that social inequalities under state socialism are qualitatively different from those under market capitalism. In this dissertation I argue that socialist stratification differs from capitalist stratification not only in the criteria according to which individuals are screened into different status groups, but also in the concept of social status per se. I identify three key institutions visible in state socialist China: the household registration

This research is concerned with a description of the system of social stratification in the context of a medium-sized Turkish town called Arde en, located in the Black Sea region. Using a Weberian analytical approach, the author analyses three dimensions of stratification which are related to the distribution of power: class, status and command; and examines the degree of correspondence between these dimensions. However, attention is given primarily to class and status. Although the third dimension of stratification (command) is also analysed it is treated as supplementary to class. A f

Poverty is a root problem in public education. When primary needs of children are not met due to root causes of poverty, children experience difficulty in school. This is most notable in inner city communities where poverty rates are highest. In the face of poverty, inner city schools appear unsuccessful with efforts to make the processes of schooling work as well for poor children as for those who are not poor. This study of poverty and inner city education asks what can an inner city school do to counter the negative effects of poverty on learning? Given that poverty is systemic, to w
