This dissertation investigates the outcome of marketing knowledge that firms acquired from their alliance partners, the mechanisms that firms use to transfer the knowledge, and factors that may affect the knowledge transfer process. The dissertation consists of two distinct parts. Part 1 examines these issues from the shareholder perspective and is an event study using secondary data. Part 2 explores the same issues in more detail from the management viewpoint and is based upon the analysis of primary survey data. Consumers use social status to learn about and evaluate value-expressive products. This thesis examines how consumers respond to products that convey status connotations. Drawing on previous research from social psychology, sociology and consumer behavior, this dissertation explores product perceptions in the context of differing social positions, and product-status levels. The research question here is whether matches or mismatches between one's social identity and a product that connotes status lead to different types of processing and evaluations. This dissertation addresses the question: What are the determinants of (and impediments to) the development of ideological sophistication? Using National Election Studies data, I develop two individual-level measures of ideological sophistication, emphasizing ideological consistency and stability. In two experiments I examined the process by which non-critical bad news communicated through an agent influences respondents' evaluations toward both the agent and the principal. Respondents rated both agents and principals most favorably when the agent adopted a forthcoming delivery style while delivering bad news. A holistic and comprehensive theory is developed in the study which attributes societal stratification to endogenous and exogenous factors as well as the interactions between the two sets of factors. Empirical analyses based on bivariate and multiple regression modelings confirm key theoretical assumptions which attribute societal stratification to a state's internal dynamics of development as well as status in the world systems. This research examines a whether a team-based marketing department impacts the positive performance of an organization. The objective of this study is to determine whether there are inadequacies in the rural financial markets of Virginia. The analysis is based on data from a survey of farm and non-farm small businesses, in five rural counties in Virginia. A Probit model is used to determine whether the financing difficulty encountered by small rural businesses is significantly determined by non-risk characteristics of users of capital and/or non-risk characteristics of local capital markets. What factors are behind a couple's redistribution of labor hours after they become parents? I come at this issue from two directions, considering first the rise in the proportion of housework hours women do, and then the drop on their proportion of employment hours. First, why don't women resist a division of housework in which they do twice what their husbands do? The 1989 and 1993 New York City mayoral elections were decided by only 97,000 votes an extremely small margin. Both elections pitted David Dinkins and Rudolph Giuliani against each other; approximately the same proportion of New Yorkers came to the polls. This dissertation attempts to show that pessimistic outlook of middle class white New Yorkers swung the election toward Giuliani.
