A holistic and comprehensive theory is developed in the study which attributes societal stratification to endogenous and exogenous factors as well as the interactions between the two sets of factors. Empirical analyses based on bivariate and multiple regression modelings confirm key theoretical assumptions which attribute societal stratification to a state's internal dynamics of development as well as status in the world systems. Interaction of development status and world systems position produce different stratification effects in different clusters of countries. These findings of the

This research examines a whether a team-based marketing department impacts the positive performance of an organization. It examines whether organizations are better able understand its customers, competitors and its environment, and have the mechanisms in place to react quickly to changes in its environment. The market-orientation theory was used to examine this theory and was found to be mediate the team-performance relationship. This study was conducted in the Canadian pharmaceutical industry. The objective of this study is to determine whether there are inadequacies in the rural financial markets of Virginia. The analysis is based on data from a survey of farm and non-farm small businesses, in five rural counties in Virginia. A Probit model is used to determine whether the financing difficulty encountered by small rural businesses is significantly determined by non-risk characteristics of users of capital and/or non-risk characteristics of local capital markets. Four variables representing different aspects of financing difficulty are used as the dependent variables in each

What factors are behind a couple's redistribution of labor hours after they become parents? I come at this issue from two directions, considering first the rise in the proportion of housework hours women do, and then the drop on their proportion of employment hours. First, why don't women resist a division of housework in which they do twice what their husbands do? And second, why do women choose to decrease their employment hours so dramatically while men's hours register virtually no change? In chapter 2, I ask whether women employ a particular equity principle in judging whether the

The 1989 and 1993 New York City mayoral elections were decided by only 97,000 votes an extremely small margin. Both elections pitted David Dinkins and Rudolph Giuliani against each other; approximately the same proportion of New Yorkers came to the polls. This dissertation attempts to show that pessimistic outlook of middle class white New Yorkers swung the election toward Giuliani. He was able to tap into the pessimism of this key group, motivating them to come to the polls and vote for change. This dissertation will analyze Census data, cross-sectional survey data and election distric

The explosion of strategic alliance activities has been phenomenal during the past decade. When partners decide to enter an alliance, one important issue to consider is which mode the alliance should take, a contractual form or a joint venture form? The first part of this dissertation examines the strategic choice between two alliance modes: contractual alliances (e.g., licensing agreements) and joint ventures. The major research question addressed is: What factors seem to influence the alliance mode choice, and why? In the past, a major perspective that has been employed to study struc

Adequate access to public goods plays an important role in the economic and rural development of any country. For the transition countries, however, providing public goods is particularly problematic, owing to several factors associated with the transition process itself ,e.g. economic recession and a charge in ownership of local public goods. Taking Russia as an example, this study examines the effect of the transition process on rural households’ access to public goods. With reference to education and health care, household access to public goods is addressed in terms of communi

This dissertation evaluates consumption-based poverty and inequality in the United States using Consumer Expenditure Survey (CEX) data for the period 1984-1998. Slesnicks's poverty and inequality analysis (1993, 1994) is replicated, amplified and extended into the late 1990s. The poverty and inequality measures rest upon micro-theoretic foundations of utility maximizing behavior and demand. Two parallel theoretical and empirical frameworks are used. The Translog model (Christensen, Jorgenson, and Lau, 1975) with expenditure-independent equivalence scales is used to replicate and extend

Until recently, beef has primarily been a homogeneous and unbranded product. Partially because of non-differentiated nature of beef, consumers have shifted consumption to other meet and non-meat food items that identify particular quality or functional characteristics. In light of the demand decline, the beef industry is in need of information regarding consumer and retailer demand for quality differentiated beef as they attempt to enhance beef sales. This dissertation used three alternative methodologies to examine the demand for quality differentiated beef. The first study used an expe

Trade relations between United States and Mexico are becoming increasingly important and interrelated ever since January 1, 1994 when Mexico, Canada and the US entered into the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Mexico is a net importer of agricultural products and imports most of its corn and sorghum from the U.S. In 2001, corn exports increased to 12% and sorghum exports increased to 82% with respect to total U.S. world exports of corn and sorghum. In the case за corn, trade barriers exist that add the measure of uncertainty to the transaction between exporter and importer

To study how social inequality has influenced the health status of the Mexican population at the individual and the state level between 1990 and 1996. Explore the pathways through which social inequality affect health. Identify policy options to address social inequality in Mexico. Theoretical framework. Social inequality is understood here as a structural feature of society that has negative consequences on health. From this perspective, the underlying assumption is that health differentials across the social spectrum are closely related to the structure of a society, which in turn is

This dissertation generates possible explanations for conflicting claims in the literature on the economic populist sentiment (or incipient class consciousness) of the contemporary American middle class. It asserts that social and political analysts have depicted the middle class as either: (1)basically accepting the socioeconomic status quo, (2)substantially discontent with growing class inequality and increasingly ready to resist it, or (3)containing a simple conglomeration of both inclinations. The study analyzes in-depth interviews with eighteen ordinary middle class individuals fro

The primary objective of this study was to explore the relationship among various market structure constructs (consisting of barriers to entry, competition, growth, and market share) and their potential impact on financial performance. By applying theoretical underpinnings from the disciplines of marketing, strategy and industrial organization economics, and adapting them to the unique characteristics of the U.S. lodging industry, the above constructs were linked to produce the Lodging Market Structure (LMS) Model. The study consisted of a cross-sectional analysis using a sample of 67 w
