Bonnie Fox
Toronto: Oxford University Press, 2001
The second edition of Family Patterns, Gender Relations thoroughly examines the dynamics and patterns in family life. The 33 articles include a mix of classics and new work commissioned for the book. These readings, by leading scholars in Canada, the US, and the UK, help to build a thorough understanding of the relations through which people care for their children, themselves, and eachother. The book starts with a theoretical examination of what constitutes a family, examines the family as it has evolved historically, and then moves on to current issues, such as sexuality, childbirth, racial and ethnic diversity, and parenting.

Karen Oppenheim Mason, An-Magritt Jensen
USA: Oxford University Press, 1995, cерия "International Studies in Demography", 344 с.
This volume focuses on the relationship between change in the family and change in the roles of women and men on contemporary industrial societies. Of central concern is whether change in gender roles has fuelled - or is merely historically coincident with - such changes in the family as rising divorce rates, increases in out-of-wedlock childbearing, declining marriage rates, and a growing disconnection between the lives of men and children. Covering more that twenty countries, including the USA, the countries of western Europe, and Japan, each essay in the volume is organized around an important theoretical or policy question; all offer new data analyses, and several offer prescriptions of how to fashion more equitable and humane family and gender systems. The second demographic transition and microeconomic theory of marital exchange are the dominant theoretical models considered; several chapters feature state-of-the-art quantitative analyses of large scale surveys.

Jerry A. Jacobs, Kathleen Gerson
Изд-во: Harvard University Press, 2005, 272 с.
In a panoramic study that draws on diverse sources, Jerry Jacobs and Kathleen Gerson explain why and how time pressures have emerged and what we can do to alleviate them. In contrast to the conventional wisdom that all Americans are overworked, they show that time itself has become a form of social inequality that is dividing Americans in new ways--between the overworked and the underemployed, women and men, parents and non-parents. They piece together a compelling story of the increasing mismatch between our economic system and the needs of American families, sorting out important trends such as the rise of demanding jobs and the emergence of new pressures on dual earner families and single parents.
Comparing American workers with their European peers, Jacobs and Gerson also find that policies that are simultaneously family-friendly and gender equitable are not fully realized in any of the countries they examine. As a consequence, they argue that the United States needs to forge a new set of solutions that offer American workers new ways to integrate work and family life.

Barbara Einhorn
Edward Elgar Publishing Ltd, 1995, 256 с.
This text explores the problems and possibilities for women which arise from the transition to a market economy in East Asia, the dismantling of state socialism in Eastern Europe and the restructuring of the economies and welfare states of the older capitalist market societies in Western Europe. Questioning whether the global trend towards market economies will constrain or enhance women's opportunities, this innovative interdisciplinary work also looks at the consequences for women as workers, and beyond that to the social and cultural implications. A distinguished group of scholars - from China, Hong Kong, South Korea and Europe - explore the issues which must be addressed before women can create a more empowering politics. Such issues include the continuing tensions between paid work in the market and unpaid work in the family and the extent to which Eastern or Western legislative frameworks, providing rights and benefits, have eased or exacerbated these tensions.

Catherine Hakim
Ashgate, 2004, 298 с.
This book reports on two comparative nationally representative surveys of men and women in Britain and Spain, two countries chosen to illustrate the diversity of modern European societies. The British survey was funded within the ESRC Future of Work Research Programme and was carried out by the Office of National Statistics (ONS). Using these surveys, Catherine Hakim presents a study of ideal models of the family and family roles, work orientations, patriarchal values, and lifestyle preferences, showing how these impact on women's marital histories, fertility, employment patterns, occupational segregation, and labour mobility, but not on men's labour market participation. Lifestyle preferences and work orientations have a strong impact on women's activities, and especially on married women's employment choices, but patriarchal values (which are most commonly studied by social attitude surveys) have virtually no impact on behaviour. The analyses demonstrate that political and religious values have virtually no connection with orientations to employment and family roles. The book also covers educational homogamy, housing classes and contrasts between ethnic minority groups in core values and labour market participation.

Jeffrey Weeks
Изд-во: Palgrave Macmillan, 1996, 288 с.
The new sociology of sexuality has a two-fold aim: to demonstrate how the social shapes the sexual; and to analyse how the sexual in turn becomes a focal point for personal identity, cultural anxiety value debates and political action. Drawing on papers from the 1994 British Sociological Association annual conference on 'Sexualities in Social Context', this volume brings together key contributors to this stimulating new approach. Topics covered include theoretical developments, the relationship between history and contemporary controversies, community and identity, especially in the context of AIDS, value conflicts and changes in the meanings of intimacy. The book as a whole offers a significant intervention into debates on sexuality, and a thoughtful contribution to the broadening of the sociological agenda.

Wendy Hollway
Изд-во: Routledge, 1997, 216 с.
Parenting, lone motherhood and the breakdown of the family ae all subjects of current political and social debate in the West, and there is little agreement among cultural commentators on what mothers should be, what children need, and how those needs conflict with the needs of parents. Feminists have played a large part in these debates in recent years, reacting particularly to negative portrayal of lone mothers in the press and the implications thay they are the source of other social problems. Mothering and Ambivalence brings together authors from therapeutic, academic and social work backgrounds to address these issues, but counters the reluctance of current feminist literature to embrace psychoanalytic understandings of dependency, anxiety and identity. Drawing on extensive professional experience the contributors use psychoanalysis to go beyond the often simplistic claims of the political debate to mothering. In their discussions of parenting and gender relations within families, the authors also surmount the narrowness of purely feminist polemics, keeping in view the importance of the diverse identities for women who become mothers. For all who are frustrated with the polarised debate about women's and children's needs and rights, this book offers and intersubjective approach to the emotional life of mothers, examining what it feels like to mother amid the pressures of contemporary social life.

Kerry J. Daly
Изд-во: Contemporary Perspectives in Family Research, 3, 2001, 440 с.
We are directed to "mind the time" on occasions when diligence to the clock is important. However, to deliberately invoke "mind your time" is to remember how quickly time, and the clock which serves as its agent, can so quickly recede into the mundane and taken for granted parts of our lives. The experience of time in families can both permeate all activities but nevertheless be hidden. The papers in this volume, representing a range of disciplines (history, sociology, psychology, family therapy, leisure studies, family science) intentionally foreground the way that time shapes everyday family worlds. Each chapter offers different insights into the way that we conceptualize time including analyses of pace, rhythm, negotiation, politics, timetables, schedules, social interaction and support. The meaning of time is illustrated through analyses of a variety of family issues including father involvement, infertility, work and family, mothering and care work, housework, family time, single parent families, family life education and gender. This volume will be of interest to scholars in a wide range of disciplines who are interested in expanding their theoretical and empirical understanding of time in families.

Diana Gittins
Изд-во: Palgrave Macmillan, 1993, 218 с.
After a decade of Thatcherism, rising illegitimacy and the moral panic over child sexual abuse, the family is more of a political issue than ever. But is it 'the family' that is in crisis, or family ideology? In this revised edition of an important and controversial book, Diana Gittins adds to a broad range of historical, anthropological and feminist evidence, a new chapter on child sexual abuse.

Michael Anderson, Jonathan Gershuny, Frank Bechhofer
USA: Oxford University Press, 1995, 304 с.
This collection provides new insights into British household economic behavior by exploring the frontier between economics and sociology. Drawing on data from the groundbreaking Social Change and Economic Life Initiative, the contributors present a comprehensive analysis of six representative towns to illuminate the ways in which households sustain themselves over time and the role of gender in modern society. The authors examine the variety of ways in which households organize their economic behaviour; how that behaviour varies between sections of the population; and how it changes over the household's life-time, as well as in the longer term. The book defines economic behaviour widely, including in its scope many vital activities which involve no direct cash transactions. At the centre of the analysis is the notion of choice. Individually and collectively, members of households make choices. In this book, economists and sociologists address their opportunities to do so, the circumstances in which they do so, and how and why their choices differ. The book illuminates the ways in which households sustain themselves over time by accumulating and maintaining both material and human resources, which are then deployed in pursuit of individual and collective ends. At the same time, it casts new light on the role of gender in modern society.

The Second Shift [книги]

Anne Machung, Arlie Hochschild
Изд-во: Penguin Books, 2003, 352 с.
Publisher Comments:
Fifteen years after its first publication, The Second Shift remains just as important and relevant today as it did then. As the majority of women entered the workforce, sociologist and Berkeley professor Arlie Hochschild was one of the first to talk about what really happens in dual-career households. Many people were amazed to find that women still did the majority of childcare and housework even though they also worked outside the home. Now, in this updated edition with a new introduction from the author, we discover how much things have, or have not, changed for women today.

Migrant networks, in the form of families, associational ties and social organizations, stretch across the globe, connecting cultures and bridging national boundaries. The effects of this global networking are vast. This book is the first to stand back and explore the impact. Families living outside of their original national boundaries have had, and continue to have, a profound influence over the flow of people, goods, money and information. More in-depth perspectives reveal how immigrants face troubling issues of cultural identity, economic change, political uncertainty and social welfare. From an examination of nineteenth-century transnational families emigrating from Europe, to the Ghanaian Pentecostal diaspora in Europe today, this book combines broadly based analysis with more unusual case studies to reveal the complexities that immigrants and refugees must contend with in their daily lives. What are the experiences of migrant Turkish women living in Germany? In what ways has religion been hybridized amongst West African Muslim migrants in Paris? What are the gender relations and transnational ties amongst Bosnian refugees? Never has such a topic been more relevant. Problems relating to immigrants' and refugees' situations in their adopted countries continue to grow. This book, wide-ranging in its geographical and thematic scope, is a highly important and timely addition to debates on transnational families, immigrants and refugees.

The ageing of Western societies has provoked extensive sociological debate, surrounding both the role of the state and whether it can afford the cost of an ageing population and at the role of the family, especially women, in supporting older people. This edited collection brings together a range of leading researchers and theorists from across Europe to advance a sociological understanding of generational relations, in terms of the state and the family and how they are interlinked. Authors examine how changes, such as cuts in welfare provision, migration, urbanization and individualisation influence intergenerational relations. The collection addresses theoretical and policy issues connecting age and generation with the family and social policy and focuses both on cross-cultural comparison within societies and analysis based on a range of societies. The Myth of Generational Conflict will be of interest to academics and researchers in sociology, social policy and ageing and to policy makers concerned about the implications of demographic and policy changes.
