Sources Of Competitive Advantage Of The Business Firms In The Slovenian Transforming Economy: Could We Explain Them By Existing Theories [книги]

The paper deals with the issues of what sources of competitive advantage have been activated most frequently in the Slovenian business firms in the last years and how well they can be explained by the existing theories. The research is based on the empirical survey that was carried out in the period from November 2000 to March 2001 in the Slovenian (mostly) medium and large business firms. The responses for the questionnaire that had been prepared were collected in randomly chosen 77 business firms (the banking sector was excluded).

The establishment of cooperative relationships with other organizations is becoming something crucial to businesses, in a way that strategic alliances or interorganizational relationships (IR) constitute an important topic for research in management literature. This study analyzes interorganizational control (IC), which represents one of the processes within IR that is receiving greater attention in the literature, from a knowledge-based perspective. Besides describing its concept and dimensions, the effect of the knowledge to be transferred in the context of IR on IC is also assessed. To be specific, there is an analysis of the influence of the characteristics of the knowledge and the extent of assimilation of knowledge by the other partners on the extent of control and control types and mechanisms. Empirical evidence is provided by our study of the relationship between tour operators from Germany and the United Kingdom and the accommodation companies, which revolves around the control exercised by the tour operators over the accommodation companies.

In this paper, first of all, a review of theoretical perspectives of co-opetition is made, and then, the authors identify alternative types of strategic behavior from the combination of competitive and cooperative attitudes. The aim of presented empirical study was to analyze correlation between different strategic behavior and performance. Particularly, the hypothesis was contrasted in the biotechnology industry.

The purpose of this paper is threefold. First, by proposing a first definition of coopetiton, it aims to move away from the mere recognition of the oversimplified conventional conception to a deeper understanding of the nature of coopetition. By suggesting that coopetition is a matter of incomplete interest (and goal) congruence concerning firms interdependence, the authors stress that coopetition does not simply emerge from coupling competition and cooperation issues, but rather it implies that cooperation and competition merge together to form a new kind of strategic interdependence between firms, giving rise to a coopetitive system of value creation. Second, the researchers advance a typology of coopetition based on the differing explanatory variables of this incomplete interest (and goal) congruence. Third, with the support of a number of coopetition microcases, especially referring to firms operating in the automobile industry, the contribution and the potential of coopetition strategy to the advancement of both strategic management, organization theory and managerial practice was clarified.

This paper attempts to analyze the association between corporate governance - measured by the exercise of control by larger shareholders and the board of directors- and corporate entrepreneurship for businesses quoted on the Madrid Stock-Exchange. Under the hypothesis of management opportunist behavior and being consistent with agency theory, this paper contrasts the existence of a greater corporate entrepreneurship when an effective control over the management does not exist, and the executives are significant shareholders. Thus, the authors examine two sources of influence on managerial support for corporate entrepreneurship: the firms ownership structure and its governance system. Their objective was to understand how firm characteristics -in terms firm corporate governance attributes- influences the decisions about entering in new businesses or markets.

Boards of directors and corporate governance debates have been highly focused in the business press and even in research, but few universities offer courses on these topics. In this paper a research and teaching model is introduced, and we will show some examples of how such courses may be designed and how they relate to research. Examples are given for executive courses, undergraduate courses and graduate courses. The paper concludes by presenting the second international doctoral course on governance in SMEs.

Archival interviews with 76 popular musicians were content-analyzed for statements about motivation, individuation and attributions of success and failure. Creativity was judged separately by consensual ratings from experts. Results show that although no differences were found in expressions of intrinsic motivation, creative musicians were less motivated to receive extrinsic rewards than uncreative musicians. Creative musicians were also more likely to individuate their products from the products of their peers, but were no more likely to personally individuate themselves. Finally, creative musicians were more likely to display positive illusion tendencies, attributing successes internally and failures to external causes.

When European managers of differing cultural backgrounds meet, they often have considerable difficulties when it comes to understanding one another. These cultural dissimilarities have a decidedly negative influence on their ability to collaborate.. The factor Culture can be especially disturbing when the acting persons are not aware of their cultural dissimilarities. Since the differences between Europeans are not as obvious as between Japanese and German businessmen, for example, people tend to neglect the influence of Culture in business relations in Europe. One innovative way of researching cultural differences is the Cultural Standard Method. It is based on a qualitative research approach and provides a tool for identifying cultural differences on a more subtle level. The purpose of this paper is to describe the cultural standards method as a tool for the comparison of European business cultures and to give examples of recent research results.

This paper aims to explain the dynamics of interpersonal relationships in a matrix organization in order to offer clues for understanding the roadblocks in building a modern network organization. The emphasis on interpersonal dynamics is not new after all it was a central concern of human relations school but systematic research has been scarce. With the advances in social network analysis pioneered by Burt (1982) it became possible to take a fresh view on interpersonal dynamics in organizations.

Organizational decisions are characterized by a multiplicity of choice criteria. This property, which in reality affects virtually all human behaviors, prevents use of the standard (neoclassical) theory of decisions based on the maximization of a single criterion. Rather, the outranking methods developed by the French school of operational research make it possible to deal with multicriterial choices and avoid the defects of the naive method. This paper develops a paradigmatic example in order to show the essential effects of the outranking methods and their compatibility with the theory of limited rationality and satisfactory choices.

The paper distinguishes between two types of inter-firm alliances: endogamy and exogamy. Endogamy occurs when partners share related profiles. On the opposite, exogamy appears when allies exhibit unrelated profiles. It is suggested that endogamy serves for accumulating similar resources and gaining scale effects while exogamy allows the combination of differentiated competences and the achievement of symbiotic effects. Two different cases are employed to infer practical recommendations regarding how these different types of partnerships should be managed.

During the last years a debate has raged within the field of Strategic Management between a rational view (IO, Positioning School, Strategic Planning, Cybernetics) and a Complex Adaptive Systems (CAS) view (Emergent strategies,complexity theory, chaos theory) of the field. This paper attempts to shed some light around an issue which must be clarified for the better development of such debate. Being the CAS view a response to the new realities of environmental turbulence, it was discussed which are the behavioral sources of such turbulence in order to clarify if such phenomena is a qualitatively new reality of business environments, or simply a contingent but circumstantial feature affecting many industries. For this purpose, the authors introduced and applied a theoretical model that conceives the strategy of the firm, as a dialectic process in a situation of conflict.

The topic of entrepreneurship has been the subject of a considerable amount of academic interest over the last twenty years. Despite a vast amount of published work there have been very few attempts to study the entrepreneurial process. In other words, we know little of the what happens as an entrepreneur moves from idea to the objective reality of a fully functioning business. A more recent phenomenon has been the shift from a focus on entrepreneurial traits to the study of entrepreneurial networks. This is recognition that even the most individualistic of entrepreneurs rely heavily on their social relationships during the creation of a new business. These two factors, networks and the entrepreneurial process, are brought together in this paper which utilises a first-hand account of activities associated with business startups. The paper also examines the way in which MBA education provides useful skills to even the most experienced entrepreneur.

This article presents a new method for the development of product ideas, where the initial focus for development is not product ideas, but fantasy worlds. Based on a mental visualization session groups develop fantasy worlds through writing stories in circles. Some of these stories are acted out in scenario play. Phrases from these stories are then used as basis for idea development. This method gives interesting ideas that would be hard to come up with through traditional brainstorming. It helps to get a broader and deeper understanding of the design task and it strongly influences the team spirit and atmosphere. The method is presented through a case with industrial design students in Oslo, where the task was to develop new mouth hygiene products for the Norwegian company Jordan.

Complementarity in the Innovation Strategy: Internal R&D, External Technology Acquisition, and Cooperation in R&D [книги]

Successful innovation depends on the development and integration of new knowledge in the innovation process. In order to successfully innovate, the firm will combine different innovation activities. In addition to doing own research and development, firms typically are engaged in the acquisition of knowledge on the technology market and cooperate actively in R&D with other firms and research organizations. In this paper the authors provide evidence on complementarity between different innovation activities. Using data from the Community Innovation Survey on Belgian manufacturing firms, the authors show that firms that are only engaged in a single innovation strategy, either internal R&D activities or sourcing technology externally, introduced fewer new or substantially improved products compared to firms which combine internal and external sourcing. This result is consistent with complementarity between own R&D and external technology sourcing activities. Furthermore, the authors show that the different innovation activities are strongly positively correlated and identify common drivers, resulting in the perceived complementarity between these innovation activities. An important finding is that a capacity to strategically protect intellectual property and a more basic R&D base which may serve as an absorptive capacity, are important common drivers for the different innovation activities.

Considerable attention has been directed towards corporate governance issues in recent years. There are however various limitations in the international mainstream research on boards of directors. Few studies address research questions beyond investigating the relationship between board composition and company performance. Most research is moreover based on empirical evidence from large publicly held US corporations. This paper summarises the accumulated knowledge from 100 student reports on boards of directors in Scandinavia. The contributions of the reports show the need to explore the influence of various contingencies, and also to take various stakeholder perspectives into account when researching corporate governance and boards of directors. The reports also show the need to go beyond counting only numbers of directors to gain insight into board working structures and relationships between directors and managers. Several advantages compared to the US mainstream research tradition can in this connection be found in Scandinavian research about boards of directors.

In the literature of labor economics we find many examples of studies analyzing job seekers search behavior, but few examples of the corresponding analysis of the recruitment behavior of employers. This paper gives a picture of the recruitment behavior of Swedish employers. The analysis is based on about 800 telephone interviews with employers regarding the last person they had hired. This paper relates the lemons problem in Akerlof with the Spence signaling model, and then it proceeds to relate indices and signals to the hiring behavior of employers. Employers mainly recruit personnel in order to expand a certain activity of their firm. On an average the total recruitment process takes about a month. In first round employers mainly look for job seekers with good education and experience. During the job interview the employer search for persons with professional knowledge, personal engagement and social competence
