В 1996 году Джеймсу Миррлизу (совместно с Уильямом Викри) была присуждена Нобелевская премия по экономике "за их фундаментальный вклад в экономическую теорию стимулов в условиях асимметричной информации". Вслед за исследованиями Уильяма Викри, Джеймс Миррлиз, расширив спектр рассматриваемых экономических ситуаций, для которых значима асимметричность информации, создал общие модели решения данной проблемы. Значительная часть работ Мирллиза посвящена проблемам оптимального налогообложения, эффективности государственной фискальной политики, а также решению проблем, связанных с асимметрией информации.
