The author addresses necessity and rightfulness
of a 'sociology of morals' as an academic discipline within the structure of sociological
knowledge, as well as its theoretical contents. Author argues against positions of
some students of ethics (V. Ganzhin, V. Bakshtanovski, Yu. Sogomonov e.a.), who define sociology of morals as a single facet
of philosophical ethical knowlegde. Sociology of morals, so Sokolov, is an independent
branch among sociological disciplines featuring own subject and object of research
or a set of categories etc. Its specifics consist not in any social object in itself,
but in its links with the entire society and with its special structures and processes.
Object and subject of sociology of morals, its essence, structure, functions, as
well as practical experiences in studying moral processes in contemporary Russia
are discussed.
