"Gender in Russians' attitudes towards second Chechnya campaign" (by Alexei Levinson) analyses VTSIOM (All-Russian Public opinion studies center) surveys data related to public opinion dynamics regarding military action in Chechnya, 1999-2002. Positions of Russian population pro and contra talks with the leaders of Chechen fighters are compared to similar data collected during the first, 1994-1996, military campaign in this republic of Russia. General assessment of the dynamic opinion in Russia is described in terms of 'on-looking' and 'mass-media peeping'. Eventual gendered differentiation in opinions towards the campaign is seen as expedient for comparisons with attitudes of general public.
