The paper looks at methodological foundations for sociological study of changing
social
consciousness. Empirically, Russia offers varying combinations of social consciousness
transformation
into a qualitatively new state reflecting respective change in all basic spheres
of social life. Describing
the change in question as a 'metamorphosis' the author looks into preconditions for
their emergence,
recent global shifts in human consciousness. Following forms are emphasized: 'split'
or 'torn-aparť,
'marginal', 'false', 'inverted' or 'deformed' social consciousness. According to
author's view, certain
segments and forms of social consciousness might be affected by those metamorphoses
producing
'catastrophic' consciousness, its social pathology, i.e., 'demagogic', 'twilight',
'non-conformist', 'protest',
and other forms of real social consciousness. Analyses of these forms might enrich
theoretical and
applied significance and further development of sociological theorizing.
