"Urbanization influences on linguistic behavior of multiethnic region inhabitants" (by Alsou Valeeva) is devoted to the links between urbanization and language behavior displayed by population in a multiethnic society (Russian Republic of Tatarstan). The study is based on the results of a 2001 survey done under the auspices of the Institute for social, economic and legal sciences of the Tatar Academy of sciences. Dwelling upon the issue of urbanization as a factor for language behavior, a comparison is made between real language activity with a sociologically construed ideal type of language behavior. Resulting data reveal the fact that urban-lingustic interactions may arguably be sociologically defined as a transition from traditional society to modernity. Linguistically this brings about a mixture of a strong predomination of mono-linguals among the urban Russians, while non-diglossal bilinguism and diglossy favoring Russian language prevail for the Tartar part of the population. A major conclusion thus obtained is the fact that urbanization seems to favor extension of areas and spheres for the Russian language behavior localizing at the same time the usage of Tartar language with an actual tendency to reduce bilinguism.
