"Professional ethics as a sociological issue" (by Vladimir Bakshtanovsky and Yuri Sogomonov) is seen by the authors as an aspect in the discourse of the nature of professional ethics. Mission, responsibility and con- ventionality are described as three consecutive steps here leading to the dilemma "service in the profession or making one's living?" and the phenomenon of self-regulation. Recent trend towards professional success, irrespective of the means to achieve it, is seen as a danger eventually leading to a loss of humane essence of the profession. Here, critics and self-critics of the profession and by the profession are deemed crucial provided they are accompanied by repeated references to societal values. Societal community and sociolo- gists, perhaps, first of all, have to hold evolving professional ethics issue under close critical scrutiny.
