Behavior of Mass Social Groups as a Factor of Transformation Process (by Tatyana Zaslavskaya) The role of behavior of mass groups of population (workers, farmers, employees, mass intelligentsia) in the process of transformation of Russian society is analyzed in the article. The author believes that increasing the effectiveness of main social practices that reflects improvement of social institutions should be considered both the final objective and real outcome of the reforms. Meanwhile, specific social practices are only partially defined by the game rules established by power elite. Common citizens do not always act according to the established rules or expectations of reformators. They often make use of behavior strategies that avoid, sabotage or violate these rules. Thus, actually functioning institutions are formed not from the "above" but as a result of interaction power elites and bureaucracy with mass social groups. The concept of transformation behavior of these groups is grounded in the article; the types of this behavior are analyzed in their connection with their functions in transformation process. The correlation between behavior of ordinary Russians and political, managerial, reformational and socially innovative activity of higher social status groups are examined.
