Factor of Hope (by Yuri Levada). Hope is one of the most widely used and most vague designations of social self-determination of a person. The findings of mass research allow treating this stale word as a definite term, even a sort of category of public opinion and public behavior that characterizes some type of "connection of times", a person's attitudes to a changing situation, his own actions and expectations. Such interpretation is based on a rather high level of recognizability of the term itself in a number of other types of social behavior perceived by public opinion. Factor of hope works as a means of a person's adaptation to the situation of social ambivalence, adaptation being upgrading, degrading, primitivizing, etc.
In modern Russian society the bearers of optimistic expectations are mainly successful, well-to-do groups of population. There are some peculiarities of the periods of social life characterized by increased level of hopes — these are the periods of low activity, moderate expectations and faded illusions. Personification of social expectations (not only of hopes, but also of fears, disappointments, etc.) historically inherent in domestic mentality is related to weakness of modern institutional base of society, to traditions of personal authority and dependence and, besides — what is very important — to permanently repeating situations of catastrophes and cataclysms. The analysis of accumulated data shows that even the most stable social hopes and illusions of mass consciousness have their limitations and experience the influence of successes, anxieties, fears and other social life circumstances.
Principal trends of dynamics, rise and fall of mass hopes in different circumstances can be an object of a comprehensive study. Factor of hope (positive expectations) seem to fulfill substantial and relatively stable functions in the range of key constructions of public opinion and to have its own empirical referents and related attitudes in mass consciousness.
