Institutional Changes in Literary Culture of
Russia, 1990-2001 (by Lev Gudkov and Boris Dubin).
The changes having occurred during the last decade in
the system of book publishing in Russia, in library
business and mass reading organization are analyzed.
While the number of new editions is significantly
increasing the print run is rapidly reducing thus
showing the decrease of reading audience by 2-3 times.
Literary criticism has lost its former social role of
literary flood selection and along with this thick literary
journals that used to join various groups of the reading
audience have lost their prestige. TV has intercepted
the leading role in organizing cultural behaviour and
has become the main channel of mass culture having
ousted the reading from the first place in leisure
