Everyone in one way or another is affected by our financial system yet few really understand how finance works. With the exception of finance specialists, the perceptions of most people toward finance are largely shaped by what we read and hear from a variety of sources, both inside and outside the financial industry. Our attitudes toward finance are formed by the actions of government, by the articles we read and news stories we hear, and from the books we read and movies we watch. These perceptions are in some cases correct and informative; in other cases, they are inaccurate, misleading and often present a stereotypical picture of the industry. This course explores the myths and realities associated with finance. It begins with a brief survey of basic finance principles with an emphasis on how financial markets function in society and how corporate financial decisions affect firms and individuals. It then examines how finance is viewed by the media (including both financial and non-financial publications), by authors of fiction and non-fiction and by the movie industry. The objective of the course is to evaluate how finance is perceived by society in relation to what finance really is. The course will also help students develop yours ability to critically evaluate the impressions students get from the media and from literature and film. As a useful by-product, students will learn a lo about finance in general.
