This dissertation addresses the question: What are the determinants of (and impediments to) the development of ideological sophistication? Using National Election Studies data, I develop two individual-level measures of ideological sophistication, emphasizing ideological consistency and stability. Bivariate tests demonstrate support for several hypotheses concerning the stratification of ideological sophistication according to various demographic, social-structural, and psychological and behavioral traits. Multiple regression analyses emphasize the relative importance of the psychological and behavioral characteristics. Finally, I use a path-analytic structural equation model to trace the possible direct and indirect influence of the demographic and social-structural characteristics. These results emphasize the importance of political interest, political knowledge, and especially education in developing ideological sophistication. These results also demonstrate the significant, although indirect, influence of sex, race, and ethnicity. Implications of the current findings and avenues for additional research are discussed.
