Russia is still a "land of incarceration" occupying second place in the world by prisoner rate. At the same time it is not a social problem in Russiain constructionist terms as there are no publicly made claims concerning this situation. Partly it can be explained by the fact that prison system in Russia is closed for the researchers, human rights watchers and other "outsiders". That is why public opinion about the situation in prison and widespread images of prisoners are formed mainly by massmedia. The article is devoted to the analysis of media images of Russian prisons and prisonersc on structed by TV news programs of channel One. The prevalence and connotations of the "symbols of threat and danger" such as bars, barbed wire etc. are discussed. These symbols can contribute to the stigmatization of former prisoners and public perception of highly severe Penal Code existing in Russia as adequate and necessary.
