The article presents the results of a qualitative study, which is based on interviews with children aged 9-13 years and their parents in St. Petersburg. The study aims to analyze how gender differences in the diet (relative amount of food intake, preferences of specific products, focus on healthy eating) are interpreted by informants: boys, girls, men and women. The eating patterns have a significant impact on quality of life. Understanding gender-specific interpretations about food consumption is especially mportant for Russia in which cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, obesity and other food-related disorders are on the rise and the gap in life expectancy between men and women is 12 years, which is 2 times higher than the global level.
