The author studies archival documents in order to analyze the interactions between members of the families divided by Swedish-Russian border as it had been agreed on in the Treaty of Stolbovo. It is concluded that the family ties of the border region population together with ambiguous policy of the local authorities resulted in the instability of the border region.
