Economic Change and Social Stratification [
Peter Baehr
First Semester 2001
This course examines the relationship between economic change and social inequality.
It investigates why some people - and some nations - are richer and more powerful
than others. In addition, it seeks to assess the extent to which economic, cultural
and political ideas and institutions are becoming globalized. Examples from both
Asian and Western societies are provided. The key objectives of this course are (1)
to offer a comparative, empirical analysis of economic change; (2) to provide
a theoretically
informed treatment of social stratification; and (3) to consider the importance
of
culture - for instance, relationships of trust as a contributing factor to an economy's
success or lack of it.

International Business Policy [
George Bailey
This module aims to develop the skills to analyse strategic problems and reach strategic
decisions in an international context. To develop an understanding of the most important
strategic issues confronting the international manager in the Twenty-First Century.
To synthesise the learning from other modules and provide a means of setting their
principles and practices in the overall organizational context; the International
Business Policy module thus draws on and builds upon theoretical and practical information
covered earlier in the course, in particular that relating to the international business
environment (The International Economy), competitor analysis (covered in
Marketing Management), organisational control, organisation culture, the structuring
of organisations and the management of change (Human Resources Strategies).

Financial Markets and Institutions [
Warren B. Bailey
Fall 2002
This course applies principles of finance to understand modern financial markets.
Central themes of the course are the structure of financial markets, the pricing
function markets perform, the interaction between financial markets and macroeconomic
conditions, and the processes of
innovation and regulation in these markets. Students should look at the workings
of a variety of markets and develop an understanding of the different problems which
different types of markets address.
Students should study the question of market efficiency and the interaction between
government policies and financial markets. Throughout the course, students should
consider the relevance of these issues for
the practical corporate, portfolio, or public sector decision-maker.
The course will include ideas and evidence from academic research along with historical,
institutional, and international perspectives. Recent events will be used to illustrate
concepts and develop analytic skills. Spreadsheet assignments and a term project
requiring data analysis will
develop your research skills and illustrate academic concepts.
This subject has few clear-cut answers or cookbook solutions.

International Finance [
Warren B. Bailey
Fall 2002
This course applies principles of finance to the international seting. International
finance is different in two basic respects. First, the existence of multiple
currencies adds risk to investment and financing decisions. Second, when corporations
and portfolio investors cross international borders both problems and opportunities
arise. Students will focus on these issues and highlight how finance theory can be
extended
to address them. We will start with basic principles of international finance, then
apply those principles to a variety of problems. The course will help you to understand
the ideas and research results of international finance and to adapt what you learn
to the practical problems on the increasingly global business world beyond the classroom.

Frank M. Bass
