Course Objectives:
To explore the concepts and skills of modern marketing strategy. We’ll touch on a variety of ideas - old ideas, new ideas, possibly wild ideas - that pertain to creating marketing strategy and examine a variety of technical marketing tools. To give you practice using your marketing knowledge to solve strategic marketing problems. To create imaginative and effective marketing strategies, you will need to draw on skills and material you have learned in prior marketing courses plus material you covered throughout your college experience - including but not limited to accounting, finance, management and psychology. To develop your analytical and communication skills through practice with cases, a simulation game, discussion and research.

This class is designed to be an upper-level course in strategy. It provides new concepts and ideas for the tool-kit of the manager involved in the. We start out with the question of how value can be created and, more importantly, appropriated. This leads to the general issue of how a competitive advantage can be built. We will focus in our discussion on new concepts that have been developed around the notions of complementarities and fit. In the next section of the course, we look at the question of what decisions managers can make to sustain a competitive advantage. In the last section of the course, we will be dealing with strategy making in the face of environmental changes. Topics include real options, modularity, and strategic inflection points.

The use of Internet technology in business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-customer (B2C) transactions is growing exponentially. In many cases transactions are initiated and managed via the Internet, but product has to be physically delivered. In these cases the cost of physical delivery is the key element in profitability. This is the subject matter of supply chain analysis. This course introduces the concept of the supply chain, broadly defined to include both design and management aspects. The course also provides a basis for analysing the economic costs and benefits of alternative supply chains.
