The article shows that mainstream economics, which now includes such current as new institutional economics, is the result of an evolution shaped by three institutions (capitalism, university and mathematics) by imposing to the profession of economists their founding beliefs. These beliefs are: «laissez-faire»; «economic knowledge has a priori and exegetical character»; «all mathematical entities exist in reality»; «beauty is a criterion for theoretical constructions»; «scientific research is a play with axioms and rules of inference». Because of these beliefs mainstream economics, based on mathematical constructions arbitrarily borrowed from the physics of the nineteenth century, remains cognitively sterile and socially detrimental.

There are two logics of the functioning of science as aninstitution: the logic of production and dissemination of knowledgeoriented to solve existing socio-economic problems and the logic ofsurvival of members of the profession. These two logics could contradicteach other. The first logic corresponds to the fulfilment by the science ofits social task. The second corresponds to aspirations of members of anysocial organism to survive as members of this organism. To our mindPragmatist Institutional Economics can fulfil successfully its social taskbut could have enormous problems to become a normal science in thesense of Thomas Khun. Economic realities are very complex, determinedto a large degree by cultural heritage but at the same time very dynamic.Knowledge concerning these realities for different countries, and even fordifferent regions and different economic sectors inside the samecountries, in different periods of time can hardly be presented on thebasis of the same categories. It means that communication betweenmembers of the modern community of academic economists, which is to agreat extent international, is difficult. In this situation advantages forcareer oriented academic economists for the creation of theirprofessional communities on the basis of Cartesianism rather thanPragmatism are obvious. This paper is an appeal to economists to adoptthe pragmatist method which, in its modern form related to socialsciences, is Qualitative Research.
