From the 1960s to the 1980s, observers attributed to Germany the character of a political-economic "model" that was able to weather a multiplicity of economic challenges. The term "model Germany" indicated a political and economic compact permitting centripetal political competition in the electoral and legislative arenas, while co-ordinating public policy among political parties, large interest associations and private business firms such that changes would take place only in an incremental and positive sum fashion. Since the early 1990s and even more so in the new millennium, the "German model" has faced serious troubles. Authors in this book describe the physiognomy of the incremental disintegration the model has undergone over the past decade and probe into the causes of such developments. Articles in this volume examine Germany's national and Europe-wide integration as triggers of the model's unravelling. Such processes are paralleled by novel tendencies in public opinion, social life styles, and modes of political mobilization in parties, interest groups, and social movements. The strains of "model Germany" show up in particularly sharply contoured fashion in the transformation of industrial relations, corporate governance structures, social and immigration policies in Germany.

With contributions from leading thinkers such as J. Bhagwati and Robert Solow, this edited collection examines some hotly debated issues in today's world. The significance of globalization and its effects on welfare states is discussed and analyzed. A special chapter is devoted to terrorism, and it is explained why some people are willing to sacrifice their lives to gain 'heavenly goods'. The role of multinationals in the globalization process is examined as is the importance of changing and evolving social norms regarding work and leisure for the survival of today's welfare states.

Myconos explores the ways in which organized labour has globalized since 1945. Using two 'touchstone' indicators - the extent of cross-border integration, and the autonomy vis-à-vis the state - the book reveals a counterintuitive process: network globalization involves a continuing orientation towards the state. The book not only seeks to identify organized labour's trajectory on the macro plane, but also to provide a more precise meaning of the term 'globalization' as it relates to agency.

Global pressures present similar challenges to companies in different countries, but how those organizations deal with them depends on the social and institutional framework in which they develop and operate. In this book, leading academics explore and explain variations in governance systems, focusing in particular on European trends. In Governance at Work: The Social Regulation of Economic Relations the authors ask: Are structures of work and business organization changing? Are we seeing a move away from large-scale (Fordist) mass-production systems that have dominated the industrialized world in the 20th century? What are the local/national determinants of business organization? Can we speak of different national business systems if so, how do these interact with the operations of international companies in global competition?
Governance in the European Union [книги]

Presenting a fresh alternative to traditional state-centered analyses of the process of European integration, Governance in the European Union clearly shows the interaction of subnational, national, and supranational actors in the emerging European polity. This "multilevel politics" approach offers a powerful lens for viewing the future course of European integration. The authors' empirical exploration of areas such as regional governance, social policy, and social movements underpins their broad conceptual and theoretical framework, providing significant new insight into European politics. Governance in the European Union will appeal to students and academics across the broad spectrum of political science, and will be of particular interest to those in European studies, public policy studies, comparative politics, and political theory.

This comparative analysis of of the coordination and control of industries in North America, Japan, and Western Europe challenges neo-classical economists' assumptions about the efficaciousness of market mechanisms as a means of enhancing economic performance. The authors also explore variation in state policies in the governance of internationally competitive industries (automobiles, chemicals, consumer electronics, and steel, for example) and demonstrate how variation in state policies influences the economic performance of industrial sectors. The authors argue that tightly controlled sectors outperform their less-regulated counterparts in the world economy.

In the present period of globalization Governing Interests presents new research on the impact of internationalization on the organization and representation of business interests through trade and employer associations. By exploring ongoing, gradual but nevertheless profound changes in the structures and functions of business interest associations, the book develops a more precise understanding of the relationship between the national and the international. Focusing on national business associations and the ways they are adjusting to the changing composition and interests of their membership, and to the shift in functions of economic governance to levels above the nation state, the essays in this volume cover a selection of OECD countries, paying special attention to Britain, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Sweden. Unlike much of the current top-down research on European integration, the volume contains both theoretical and empirical papers studying internationalization from the bottom-up, adopting the perspective of national actors facing new challenges and opportunities in their international environment.

Europe and the United States confront common challenges in responding to the transformations of work and welfare in the 'new economy', and there are signs of far-reaching changes in the role of government as a direct result. This volume presents the latest research by a team of outstanding international contributors. Parts One and Two examine new approaches to the governance of work and welfare in the EU and the US respectively; and Part Three surveys emergent trends and reflects on future possibilities.

In this study, Angus Maddison explores the causes of the West’s economic growth over the last 2,000 years and contrasts it with the economic history of the rest of the world. Maddison explores the impact of Western conquest on the Americas and analyzes the indigenous and external forces that hindered advance in Asia and Africa. He debunks the notion that the Western ascension originated in the industrial revolution in England in the late eighteenth century. His unique analysis suggests that Western Europe overtook Chinese levels of per-capita income in the fourteenth century, in sharp contrast to the prevailing scholarship asserting that China was ahead of Europe until 1800. Growth and Interaction in the World Economy provides guidance on the broad contours of development, which complements qualitative analysis that, on its own, cannot clearly identify the timing and scope of economic changes.

Philip Hoffman shatters the widespread myth that traditional agricultural societies in early modern Europe were socially and economically stagnant and ultimately dependent on wide-scale political revolution for their growth. Through a richly detailed historical investigation of the peasant agriculture of ancien-régime France, the author uncovers evidence that requires a new understanding of what constituted economic growth in such societies. His arguments rest on a measurement of long-term growth that enables him to analyze the economic, institutional, and political factors that explain its forms and rhythms. In comparing France with England and Germany, Hoffman arrives at fresh answers to some classic questions: Did French agriculture lag behind farming in other countries? If so, did the obstacles in French agriculture lurk within peasant society itself, in the peasants' culture, in their communal property rights, or in the small scale of their farms? Or did the obstacles hide elsewhere, in politics, in the tax system, or in meager opportunities for trade? The author discovers that growth cannot be explained by culture, property rights, or farm size, and argues that the real causes of growth derived from politics and gains from trade. By challenging other widely held beliefs, such as the nature of the commons and the workings of the rural economy, Hoffman offers a new analysis of peasant society and culture, one based on microeconomics and game theory and intended for a wide range of social scientists.
