THE PROBLEM OF TAXING FARMERS IN CHINA / доклад на 25 конференции IAAE, Reshaping Agriculture’s Contribution to Society, International Convention Centre, Durban, South Africa, 16-23 August 2003 [книги]
Опубликовано на портале: 12-12-2003Ran Tao, Mingxing Liu, Qi Zhang
This paper places the problem of Chinese rural taxation in the context of government regulation and tries to present an integrated theoretical framework of rural development in China in the past two decades. Our theoretical framework can reconcile the stylized facts that the average level of rural taxation relative to rural net income after the 1990s did not increase very fast, but rural taxation became a very serious problem in this period. We found that this is in large part due to the increase of rural income disparity after 1990s and the uneven tax and fee distribution among different income groups. We argue that differentiated enforcement of the government regulations such as grain procurement and birth control play an important role in the rural taxation problem, and more generally, the problem of expanding local government size and rising rural income disparity. The empirical findings do support our hypothesis.

THE "NEW ECONOMY" AND EFFICIENCY IN FOOD MARKET SYSTEM: A COMPLEMENT OR A BATTLEGROUND BETWEEN ECONOMIC CLASSES? / доклад на 25 конференции IAAE, Reshaping Agriculture’s Contribution to Society, International Convention Centre, Durban, South Africa, 16-23 August 2003 [книги]
Опубликовано на портале: 24-12-2003Gerald Schluter, Chinkook Lee
Rapid developments in E-commerce can bring efficiency in the food market system by cutting transaction costs. However, it can also bring a battleground between developed and developing countries and also within developed countries because the New Economy emphasizes knowledge-based labor practices and low-skilled workers of trading nations compete for a shrinking need for their services. An Input-Output model is used to examine the effects on high-skilled and low-skilled worker demand, particularly in food and agriculture. The food and agriculture industries are significant employers of low-skilled labor. Food and agriculture trade has reduced low-skilled labor demand in the United States.
The regional incidence of European agricultural policy: measurement concept and empirical evidence /доклад на 10 конгрессе ЕААЕ, Exploring Diversity in the European Agri-Food System, Zaragoza, Spain, 28-31 August 2002 [книги]

The objective of this paper is twofold. First, we intend to show how regional impacts of the CAP can be measured in terms of the price and revenue impacts. Second, new empirical evidence will be presented by use of the proposed method for regions in Germany. Data utilized are available over time (1986-99) and across commodities, so that regional support due to the CAP can be aggregated from support for the individual commodities.

Over the last years the resource-based view (RBV) of strategic management has attracted wide academic and managerial attention. Drawing on RBV literature, this paper analyses the interrelationships between RBV and organizational innovation. The authors examine those aspects of RBV that critically determine the firms capacity to innovate by integrating the relevant theoretical and empirical evidence. A number of contributions setting the ground for future empirical research are provided.
The response of farmers to SAPARD in the Lodz region /доклад на 87 семинаре ЕААЕ, Assessing Rural Development Policies of the CAP, Vienna, Austria, 21-23 April 2004 [книги]
Опубликовано на портале: 31-03-2005Pawel Bryla
The paper aims to improve our knowledge about the response of farmers to a new instrument of the rural development policy in the Lodz region in Poland. It seeks to explore the characteristic features of the agricultural holdings and their owners applying for public financial support in the framework of an EU pre-accession fund. The analysis might be useful from the point of view of evaluating the Special Accession Programme for Agriculture and Rural Development (SAPARD).

This paper provides a comprehensive review of the literature on firm specific characteristics influencing knowledge sharing. According to the first attempts to build a knowledge theory of the firm, the firm is best fit to exploit knowledge (Conner & Prahalad, 1996; Jensen & Meckling, 1992; Kogut & Zander, 1993). Despite this fact, companies are not enough capturing value from their knowledge due to the nature of knowledge (Teece, 1998). Organisations are however able to develop an identity that facilitates knowledge sharing, but such identity causes unlearning problems. In two case studies, the attitudes towards knowledge sharing were in dept analysed. The cases confirmed the importance of an identity to build trust and to stimulate informal knowledge sharing.
THE ROLE OF SCHOOLING IN THE ALLEVIATION OF RURAL POVERTY IN ETHIOPIA / доклад на 25 конференции IAAE, Reshaping Agriculture’s Contribution to Society, International Convention Centre, Durban, South Africa, 16-23 August 2003 [книги]

The impact of education on farmers. choice of activities and household welfare are modelled and estimated using farm household data for rural Ethiopia. We find that education has significant effects on household welfare. Schooling increases the adoption of new technologies and facilitates entry into highly profitable farm and non-farm activities, all of which may increase welfare and help farm households escape out of income poverty. An additional year of schooling in a household increases the welfare by 8.5 Percent. These findings provide a rationale to governments and donor organisations to include the expansion of rural schooling (through encouragement of parents to send their children to school) in their policy reform as a means of reducing material deprivation.
The role of transaction costs and bargaining power in wildlife and landscape services production: a micro-econometric model for Dutch dairy farms /доклад на 10 конгрессе ЕААЕ, Exploring Diversity in the European Agri-Food System, Zaragoza, Spain, 28-31 August 2002 [книги]
Опубликовано на портале: 29-11-2003Nico Polman, Jack Peerlings
In this paper a theoretical and empirical model is developed for analysing the decisions of individual farmers whether or not to produce wildlife and landscape services, how much of these services to produce and form an environmental co-operative in order to reduce transaction costs or to build up bargaining power. The model is applied for Dutch dairy farmers as the main users of agricultural land in the Netherlands. Simulations show that the reduction of transaction costs makes it attractive for farmers to form an environmental co-operative in case of a fixed price for wildlife and landscape services. Therefore more wildlife and landscape services are produced and more farmers are involved compared to a situation with individual supply. If demand is no longer perfectly elastic an increase in wildlife and landscape services production leads to lower prices offsetting part of the production and profit increase caused by lower transaction costs. However, if the environmental co-operative acts like a monopolist its bargaining position leads to a decrease in the production of wildlife and landscape services and higher prices.
Lewis S. A. The slowing down of the engine of growth [Текст] / S. A. Lewis // Economic sciences, 1969-1980 / ed. by A. Lindbeck. Singapore, 1992.

This paper tries to show the relationship between strategic process and process performance, considering the influence of a contextual dimension of organisational complexity. The authors introduce the term vertical complexity, which as considered more related to process. Correlation analysis show the influence of both intention and rationality in the process performance with low levels of vertical complexity in the firm. For high levels of vertical complexity, process and performance are not so strongly related, confirming only partially some of our hypotheses. The final sample were 112 big Spanish firms corresponding to very different industries.
The structure and significance of strategic episodes: social systems theory and the routine practices of strategic change [книги]
Опубликовано на портале: 25-12-2002John Hendry, David Seidl
In this paper we draw on Niklas Luhmanns social systems theory, and in particular his concept of an episode, to guide research into strategic practice and its relationship to the operating routines of an organization. Episodes, in Luhmanns theory, provide a mechanism by which a system can suspend its routine structures and so initiate a reflection on and change of these structures. Applying this theory to the organisational process of strategic change, the authors draw attention to the routine nature of strategic episodes and to their organisational role as the effective locus of strategic practice and the interaction between strategic and operating routines.
The Sustainability of Italian Agriculture: A Pilot Project /доклад на 87 семинаре ЕААЕ, Assessing Rural Development Policies of the CAP, Vienna, Austria, 21-23 April 2004 [книги]
Опубликовано на портале: 29-03-2005Antonella Trisorio
This paper provides a first attempt of assessing the progress of Italian agriculture towards the path of sustainability. A set of indicators have been implemented taking into account social, economic and environmental dimensions of agriculture. Indicators may help policy maker in addressing and targeting policies, identifying possible priorities to which address financial resources. It finally suggests a possible solution to the problem of aggregation finalised at a synthetic representation of the progress towards sustainability.

Empirical studies of strategising face contradictory pressures. Ethnographic approaches are attractive, and typically expected. We argue, however, that todays large, multinational, and highly diversified organisational settings require supplementary methods providing more breadth and flexibility. This paper discusses three particularly promising approaches (interactive discussion groups, self-reports, and practitioner-led research) that fit the increasingly disparate research paradigms now being used to understand strategising and other management issues. Each of these approaches is based on the idea that strategising research cannot advance significantly without reconceptualising frequently taken-for-granted assumptions. The paper focuses in particular on the importance of working with organisational members as research partners rather than passive informants.
