The farm-to-retail price spread has widened in the 1990s due to increased costs associated with additional services and marketing provided by food processors. Producers have begun to search intensively for methods to maintain the larger portion of this price spread, essentially retaining a greater share of the consumers’ food dollar and becoming more profitable. Vertical coordination by producers has been identified as a sustainable means of enhancing the value of producers’ operations. Two methods of vertical coordination that have become more popular are ownership of closed

Flows of foreign direct investment (FDI) are increasingly seen as a very important channel to the transfer of technology and capital for developing countries. Developing countries compete vigorously among themselves to attract greater volumes of foreign direct investment as to multinational food and beverage corporations to seek out emerging markets. The situation is analogous to the development in the Latin Americas and the Caribbean. This thesis provides the review of the growing body of literature on the determinants and models of FDI, and an empirical to test hypotheses about FDI mo

The Government of Senegal is attempting to liberalize the groundnut market. In the past, this market was highly regulated with government-set producer prices, groundnut oil processing mills owned by parastatals, and requirements that all groundnuts be sold to these quasi-governmental organizations. In recent years, these rules are being relaxed, and farmers are allowed to sell groundnuts on the open market. However, farmers continue to sell most of their groundnuts, as before, to the mills. This study attempts to shed light on the effects of this market liberalization. First, an attemp

The objective of this research was to create an industry-targeting model for the Great Plains region. The model estimates the probability of 100 aggregate industry sectors locating in any of the 430 counties in six Great Plains states over the 1995 to 2003 time period. The probabilities are based on twenty-three county characteristics that were identified as important determinants of industry location. The model may help local economic development officials identify viable industries for their recruitment efforts. This research consisted of constructing and evaluating two distinct models

The objective of this study is to determine whether there are inadequacies in the rural financial markets of Virginia. The analysis is based on data from a survey of farm and non-farm small businesses, in five rural counties in Virginia. A Probit model is used to determine whether the financing difficulty encountered by small rural businesses is significantly determined by non-risk characteristics of users of capital and/or non-risk characteristics of local capital markets. Four variables representing different aspects of financing difficulty are used as the dependent variables in each

Adequate access to public goods plays an important role in the economic and rural development of any country. For the transition countries, however, providing public goods is particularly problematic, owing to several factors associated with the transition process itself ,e.g. economic recession and a charge in ownership of local public goods. Taking Russia as an example, this study examines the effect of the transition process on rural households’ access to public goods. With reference to education and health care, household access to public goods is addressed in terms of communi

Until recently, beef has primarily been a homogeneous and unbranded product. Partially because of non-differentiated nature of beef, consumers have shifted consumption to other meet and non-meat food items that identify particular quality or functional characteristics. In light of the demand decline, the beef industry is in need of information regarding consumer and retailer demand for quality differentiated beef as they attempt to enhance beef sales. This dissertation used three alternative methodologies to examine the demand for quality differentiated beef. The first study used an expe

Trade relations between United States and Mexico are becoming increasingly important and interrelated ever since January 1, 1994 when Mexico, Canada and the US entered into the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Mexico is a net importer of agricultural products and imports most of its corn and sorghum from the U.S. In 2001, corn exports increased to 12% and sorghum exports increased to 82% with respect to total U.S. world exports of corn and sorghum. In the case за corn, trade barriers exist that add the measure of uncertainty to the transaction between exporter and importer

In times of tightening national budgets as a result of structural adjustment requirements, the need to make choices in Zimbabwe¹s publicly funded research is heightened. Adoption of quantitative priority setting methods help improve the objectivity of decision-making while fostering consistency of research priorities with the attainment of research system objectives This study develops and applies a quantitative methodology for agricultural research priority setting for Zimbabwe¹s Department of Research and Specialist Services (DR&SS) under multiple objectives.

The objective of this study is to examine the financial characteristics of farmers in North Central Kansas and to relate this to the number of and types of lender that they choose to use. Specifically, the study is concerned with analyzing the changes, if any, of the use of nontraditional lenders such as John Deer and Case credit. To meet this objective, econometric analysis was used to determine which farm characteristics affect the market share of loans that different lenders have and how this has changed over time. Two sets of Tobit models were developed to analyze the types of instit

Nitrogen (N) is a key nutrient input to crops and one of the major pollutants to the environment from agriculture in the United States. Recent developments in site-specific management (SSM) technology have the potential to reduce both N overapplication and underapplication and increase farmers' net returns. In Virginia, due to the high variability of within-field yield-limiting factors such as soil physical properties and fertility, the adoption of SSM is hindered by high grid?sampling cost. Many Virginia corn-wheat-soybean farms have practiced generating yield maps using yield monitors

Land is a composite good, the price of which varies with its characteristics, including proximity to amenities. Analysis of data from sales of land near Green Mountain National Forest wilderness areas in a hedonic price model reveals a positive relationship between proximity to protected wilderness and market values for residential properties. The applications of this result include improved consideration of the positive economic impacts of land conservation in political deliberations over public land management and new mechanisms for financing land conservation, local planning and devel

The Economic Impacts of the Texas Wine and Wine Grape Industry in the State’s Economy. Wine grape growing and wine making in Texas have taken place for over three hundred years. In 1900, Texas had 20 to 30 wineries, but the majority of these did not survive prohibition. By the late 1960s, only one winery remained operating in the state. In early-to-mid 1970s, wine grape growing and wine making activities experienced a rebirth in the state. Currently, there are 28 wineries in the state which produce between 800000 and 1300000 gallons of wine annually. In this study, the Texas wine

The United States has witnessed a dramatic increase in per capita consumption of wheat flour since 1970. The increase is seen in all six major classes produced, including hard red winter, hard red spring, soft red winter, soft white, hard white, and durum wheat. This has heightened the need for research on the price responsiveness within and between wheat classes. To quantify price responsiveness, derived demand functions were estimated for wheat by class. Three derived demand functions were specified and estimated. First, a double-log model was estimated using both ordinary least squar
