"Baltic countries: ethnic social specifics and common traits" (by Renald Simonian) looks into cultural, historical, political, and social psychological aspects of Baltic ethnoses' positioning in the North-Western region of European space, accentuating first of all links and relations between Russia and Baltic states. The paper in built on numerous sociological studies done by the author during last 10 to 12 years. Ethnoses inhabiting this region feature a set of properties needed in the first line to ensure their survival. Among the defensive qualities they display some traits that set them apart from Russians. They are less open and, respectively, not so hearty and sincere. Their actions are dominated not so much by emotional, as by rational motivations. They are not so gullible and naive. Certain shifts have been, however, found present in mass public opinion of original population regarding past, present, and future of their countries, as well as growth of positive attitudes towards locally residing Russian communities.
