"Social constructing of disability" (by Elena Yarskaya-Smirnova) sees disabiliby as social
and cultural construct, a result of social conventions. Its meaning varies with the cultural
traditions and social setting, gender, age, and other interacting factors. Social problems of the
disabled people have to be studied as an aspect of day-to-day interactions, defining and re-
defining life situation of the persons involved. Traditions of ethnic sociology and of
sociocultural studies are seen as most promising approaches for the present-day situation in
Russia in order to achieve a more fundamental understanding of the disabled people problems.
