The Dynamics of Social Statuses during 20 Years (by Marina Krasilnikova). The paper analyses the structure of Russian society from the perspective of the dynamics of the subjective evaluations of social position during the 20 years of socio-economical reforms in Russia, from early 80-s till the end of the 20th century. The groups of population whose social position has deteriorated or improved are distinguished on the basis of individual data on the trends of changes in the social status of respondents during the 80s and the 90s. Special attention is paid to the study of the position of respondents groups whose social status has been changing in different directions during the period observed.
The article shows that the result of 20-year period of socio-economic transformations in Russia was significant changes in the society social structure. These changes are manifested by the fact that about half of population that referred themselves to relatively well-off layers of society under the socialism found themselves at the bottom of the social ladder. The share of those who represented the middle part of the society under socialism and were able to keep up their positions on the whole is somewhat less. The top of the social ladder (rather small in size) is occupied now by those who had referred themselves to the lower layers under the socialism All these changes have led to decreasing the average status self-evaluations in the society on the whole.
The analysis of long-term dynamics of social statuses that allows to single out the group of population that has really profited from the transformations in Rusia gives us the opportunity of defining more precisely the group of these changes supporters. It's shown in the article that this group is not reduced neither to the top of our present society, nor to those who realize their position improvement during the 90s (these are traditional characteristics describing "the groups of support" for changes taking place in Russia. The paper also testifies that taking age differences into account doesn't basically change the discovered regularities of making up the dynamics and structure of Russian society.
