In this course we will study the various dimensions of social inequality in American society and around the world from a comparative and historical perspective. Focus will be on the ways in which social class, race and gender interact to influence human lives.

We will begin by discussing the key concepts and major dimensions of social stratification and inequality. This will be followed by an overview of the historical development of social inequality and the world stratification system. Then, we will analyze the main classical and contemporary explanations of stratification.

Within this context, class, racial and gender inequalities in the United States and other societies will be considered. Detailed discussions of the upper, middle & working classes and the poor will be followed by analysis of social mobility and the ways in which inequalities are perpetuated and legitimated. We will then compare the American situation with the stratification systems in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Finally, we will discuss the possibility of reducing inequalities through social action and social change.
