Foreign Direct Investment Strategies by Multinational Food and Beverage Corporations into the Caribbean and Latin America

Flows of foreign direct investment (FDI) are increasingly seen as a very important channel to the transfer of technology and capital for developing countries. Developing countries compete vigorously among themselves to attract greater volumes of foreign direct investment as to multinational food and beverage corporations to seek out emerging markets. The situation is analogous to the development in the Latin Americas and the Caribbean. This thesis provides the review of the growing body of literature on the determinants and models of FDI, and an empirical to test hypotheses about FDI modal patterns. A Binomial Logit Model was employed to analyze how firm and country characteristics explain different investment models of foreign direct investment. Data covered the 100 largest multinational agribusiness’s, that made investment into the Latin Americas and Caribbean regions from 1990 to 1996. The investment activities are classified as full investment activities such as acquisitions and buyouts, and partial investment activities that consist of co- enterprises and contractual agreements
