The article is focused on the emergence of the idea of the Parliament’s existence from the ‘time immemorial’ and its continuity from the Anglo-Saxon period to the late 16 th century. This concept was based on the treatise ‘Order and usage’ by an antiquary and lawyer John Hooker (c. 1527–1601). Hooker’s text is compared to the14 th century text Modus tenendi Parliamentum. Hooker’s book was influenced by his political and religious views as well as his experience of working in the English and Irish Parliaments. The past was ‘invented’ by the author to help solve the problems of his own time.
